  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Length of 18mm RPP

I'll ask again. Is this really the recommended way to store your RED Pro Primes with front element facing down? Which in turn means that you think it's okay to take the lenses up by the PL-mount / Iris ring?

Personally I think I'd just turn those lenses over in the case and store them front element up.

I wouldn't - since the foam in the bottom isn't fitted for the caps which means they could balance unevenly on the PL-mount. Or am I being too hypothetical about the problem? :tongue_smilie:

I think you're overthinking it a little there. It's nice when the PL cap is hugged in place by the foam, but the lens tube itself is held by the foam so there will not be any undue stress on the mount. I've seen plenty of lens cases which are simple tubes and that's just fine.

Do they not balance unevenly while on a PL mount? Seems like the top of the PL on the lens has a different weight than the bottom--not to mention pulling in different directions.

I prefer front elements up -- keeps the lens caps in place. In the original RED RPP case, it's pretty much impossible to place the lenses with the front elements down because the lens caps often get stuck and come off when removing the lens. I also have the original version without the handy "E-Z grip" finger holes.

With both cases, they give round foam inserts to make the depths of the tubes or lens wells or whatever the proper depth for your lens. Over time, these compress and will shape to the PL cap. Not that it matters. My case is a snug fit, the lens isn't going to be shifting from one side to the other.

The new compact case looks a bit different though. It has extra cut-out depth around the lenses, so storing your lenses as shown with the mounts up almost seems like the better way. Then again, if the lens caps are always coming off, you won't want to do this.

I have actually had to cut more foam inserts for my case. With regular transport and use, the weight of the lenses has compressed the foam in the bottoms of the lens holes.

Thanks for the info Jarred. So the 18mm is the same size as the 25 and 35? Or is it .25" longer?

Hey Tony have a read dat this thread: Transporting Lenses Do and Don't

I believe firmly that the best way to transport larger lenses is for them to be on their SIDE, and that the case have only a TOP handle to avoid for the case to be moved and or transported were the lenses are other then in their side position.

However, as in the case of lenses placed in cases were they are on a strait up or down position, as in the case of the RPP's in the RED case, I do believe that even so I would much prefer to see the lenses Facing UP, it could account for more of a risk then a benefit, as it is much easier to drop a lens when lifted by its front element and especially when and if the front cap is just a snap on, as it is fro most.

I believe that what RED has decided as far as the design on the RED case, and the shown placement of the RPP's is not just so that the rear Pretty cap with the RED logo, shows off in glory, but because RED possibly fils comfortable in having their lenses lifted by the rear :-)

I also imagine that you can place the lenses face up if you choose to , but it could be that the foam design will not give the lenses their intended support if facing up.

Thanks Ketch. I did read through the thread a while back - lots of great info in there. I'm personally having my own cases done with the lenses lying down. It is so much easier to get a firm grip on the lens that way. I'm also going to be having only three lenses in each case. The size and weight of a case with 6 lenses kills me just by looking at a photo of it ;-)

I'll be sure to post photos of the cases when they're done (still waiting for money from clients before I can order them).

I don't know about you all, but I don't really like lifting my RED primes via their PL mount cap as all the caps on my lenses (two months old) come off SUPER easy. I have maybe one cap that isn't an issue. Anyone else have this issue? My lens caps also come off fairly easily, but that's to be a little more expected than caps that you put on and turn.

Duclos makes very nice 110mm Delrin replacement front caps for the RPPs. Much better than the stock front caps. For sale at Abel.

We also have replacement PL caps. I agree with you about lifting from the cap.

Finally had my lens cases done and here's a shot of one of them. There's two and they're identical (plus one slightly smaller for the 300mm). Each case has three donuts I can stick use to fit both the short and long primes in each slot. I'm not overly satisfied with the result and finish but needed them done quickly because I have a rental they needed to be finished for. Grabbing the lenses is pretty hard because they're seated too deep into the foam - so that's something I will need to have re-done later this month.
