Lemo connector

Hello all,


I'm making a motion control product since one year now, and these last few day I'm struggling with the choice of cable connector. Let's be clear, since day 1 I'm only thinking about Lemo. But as the release comes close, the price of cables VS the price of the product feels like a non sense to me.

My product is using 4 pins to transmit power and data (You can interconnect head, slider, battery, remote, crane and other add-on in daisy chain) so I have something like 10 female connector and about the same in cable (10 male connector).

In lemo price (And some mid current, we're talking about 10A 14.8v), this is really expensive. Of course we all know the quality of the lemo connector. As a manufacturer, I don't mind to make a product with expensive lemo but at the same time as a customer I always find silly to buy a product 1K and spend $500 in cable (For a 10K red it makes sense though).

So here is my question, how much are you values the lemo in a product ? Is it a no go for you if not ?

Lemos are great but hirose are cheaper and not bad at all, check these out!

Or if going Lemos route keep in mind their patents are expired so you can find cheaper alternatives which works 100% the same (albeit without the same reliability perhaps).

If it's only 4 pins, and not too restricted by size, then 4-pin XLR would work fine, and be really cheap. And potential buyers of a $1K product will thank you for it!

Of course you'd want to label the cables as being specific to your system so that your cables wouldn't be used elsewhere for the usual camera DC power applications, or for cables from camera DC applications to be used on your system. Then again, if they are straight wired 1 to 1, then it probably wouldn't blow anything up if the wrong 4-pin XLR cables were used anyway.

It seems that you don't care too much about the lemo or not as long as the connector - of course - don't break ? It's more of a premium feeling issue than finding an other connector, I have a feeling on set that people working with expensive gear prefer to work with lemo than other connector.

Indeed but sadly it's too big, and the mini XLR won't make it because of the 5A limit.
