  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica Zoom (Rare) + EPIC -X + Wooden Camera AB mount...

If you just want to test a lens on the cheap I would go with this option from fotodiox and save yourself a couple of hundred dollars. Its clicks right on and any play or give or might have, the canon Ti mount from RED screws down on the lens PL mount style so its all rock solid in the end. Of course this is not my end solution.

The gold standard for those looking to convert R glass to EOS is the one from leitax.com...same one Duclos will use when I send my lens in to get it modded.

Clayton,

of course that you didn't get what I was taking about.

Why?

Just because if you want to keep a way to stay truly Leica (here it means to get yes Leica glass optically speaking) you have to go ZIG-ZAG.

I think I was already talking about that concept here at the forum.

What does it mean?L

ZIG-ZAG way is mainly based on the limitation of Epic/Scarlet design (already discussed here but also this design error could be changed in the next upgrade)

and it means that you have to make a certain compromise but anyway you would be able to swap between best Leica R and Leica M lenses in a second.

Before you would need Leica M mount from RED or SpaceCam Systems Inc. and FotoDiox Leica R to Leica M adaptor, also original from Leitz if you can still find it or any other third party similar adaptor.

This mixed lens line starts by focal length of 15mm presenting the best Leica lenses (R+M) and ends with 800mm.

The first step is called ZIG>>>Leica R:

15mm F2.8 ASPH Super-Elmarit-R

19mm F2.8 Elmarit-R (2nd Version, ROM)

21-35mm F3.5-4.0 ASPH Vario-Elmar-R ZOOM

28-90mm F2.8-4.5 ASPH Vario-Elmarit-R ZOOM

35mm F1.4 Summilux-R

35-70mm F2.8 ASPH Vario-Elmar-R ZOOM

The second step is called ZAG>>>Leica M:

50mm Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH (the best fastest FF35mm lens ever made)

50mm Leica Summilux-M 50mm ASPH (probably the best lens ever made)

75mm Leica Apo-Summicron-M 75mm ASPH

90mm Leica Apo-Summicron-M 90mm ASPH (probably the highest MTF lens ever made)

The third step is called ZIG (again)>>>Leica R:

70-180mm F2.8 Vario-APO-Elmarit-R ZOOM

80mm F1.4 Summilux-R

90mm F2.0 APO Summicron-R

100mm F2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R

135mm F2.8 Elmarit-R

180mm F2.0 APO-Summicron-R

180mm F2.8 APO-Elmarit-R

180mm F3.4 APO-Telyt-R

280mm F2.8 APO-Telyt-R Module

400mm F2.8 APO-Telyt-R Module

560mm F5.6 APO-Telyt-R Module

800mm F5.6 APO-Telyt-R Module

Here this ZIG-ZAG-ZIG route means to switch between R and M lenses using R to M adaptor.

I suppose with Leica's zooms often being better than primes you would forgo a few primes here and there, but wouldn't you want the 24mm f/2.8 for consistent f/2.8 through the wide range?

Roberto,

of course you could include 24mm f/2.8 and 28mm f/2.8 if needed,...

The 28mm later verion is very very good, the 1st version is also good......

Now please, please can we stop discussion how good Leica glass is, the price continues to escalate and has gone up over 4 times in the last couple of years sine I've been buying it.

Hehe...true! My 24 e 35 are more expensive on ebay now than when I bought at B&H back in 98. The idea of having cheap Leica Rs in ex+/mint are long gone. You have to dig deep for a "ex" made in germany one. The Canada ones you can get a good deal, but then...

The sellers on Ebay are price gouging, do not buy from any of the guys that only list a BUY-IT-NOW, their prices are usually $500-$2000 higher than the lenses are worth. If you are patient and buy from a true auction listing, where buyers determine the final price you will save a bundle.

Meet Oliver....the new pup.

ok so I promised some examples of this special piece of glass i have come across (Leica zoom 35-70 2.8)...here are some shots of the family messing about in the living room. Wish I took better notes as to what stop I was at etc but for sure this was fully open at 2.8 and I believe I am at 1600 iso, available light of course. ;) Catalonia spain in the country. Busy but I will post when I can.

Hey Robert....yes I will get around to that. IQ is amazing on this glass indeed...I dont know what it scores under a lens bench and a projector and from what i know its far from perfect but at the end of the day IQ is all that matters to a cat like myself. More to come.

Wow, very nice.

Just so you know I only applied a bit of redcine magic, a dash of alchemy...and with a touch of luck and you will get good results ;) (another leica 35-70 shot but this time using macro)

Amazing shot!!!

It's a pity that Jim didn't take more serious the case of early reverse engineering of my RED ONE with IMS to get all those best Leica M+R lenses on RED.

Knowing that early enough for sure we would get Leica M mount from day one with Epic/Scarlet.

Suddenly RED discovered Leica M and R lenses as one of the best for stills...also cine shooting...

Now I think we have to wait for Dragon sensor upgrade to get the sensor back adjustment just to mount all Leica M lenses.

Also hope in the meantime Leica will consolidate with the investment and accelerate building of its production facility for all best Leica M and R lenses.
