  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

Trying out the Leica APO 2x Extender on my 180 2.8 APO and 180 3.4 APO.

There is a ROM and non-ROM version that are supposed to optically identical, but the housing is quite different.

Does anyone know if one is stronger than the other for lens support?

Well ended up getting one of each and was glad I had the ROM version because it was the only one that fit the few Leica Rs I own with ROM contacts, like the 180 APO 2.8 and 90 APO ASPH Cron. Build-wise they both seem extremely solid, as you'd expect from Leica.

If anyone is interested in a 2x APO extender (non-ROM) at a good price, send a PM.

I'm trying to help someone figure out the best way to use Leica R lenses on his Red One.

I've never owned a Red One and don't know the best/most economical options.

Any advice is greatly appreciated... thanks!

Allstar A-Mount. The mount is slightly different than the Epic/Scarlet version, but the lens adapters work interchangeably. It's super solid, a definite alternative to EOS mount, possibly better as you can mix PL/BNCR/OCT19/CY/Nikon/R lenses together if need be without changing the base mount on the camera.

Thanks Clint! We looked into that option last week but sounded like they may no longer be available for the Red One...

Just sent an email to the company to find out for sure! I'll post an update if we learn anything new.

Does anyone have experience and/or an opinion to offer about using a clip on matte box with Duclos cinevised Leica Rs?

Can they take the weight or is it just too dicey?

Much appreciated,
Mark

Generally speaking, even all metal, fully manual well constructed stills lenses like these...don't handle clip on Matteboxes superbly (neither do Super Speeds for that matter). Maybe some of the beefier long lenses could handle the weight, but in general...odds are you may see some buckling or binding of the inner elements and outer housing...which could be disconcerting, and probably not great for the lenses themselves...

Yeah... that's my sense, too.

Swing away it is.

Thanks.

I agree on that. I use clip-on matte box with my PL mount lenses which are heavy and solid, I'd rather pick the swing away option if I need a matte box with the Leica-R cine modified.

I've been using a Lanparte ii Follow Focus, which was relatively inexpensive but found it to be just 'ok' at best. It took a hit during a recent project and is pretty much unusable now.

Looking to replace it with a better FF that is compact yet very accurate to primarily use with these Leica Rs.

Have seen recommendations for the Arri MFF-1 but some say it won't reach the smaller Leicas... same issue with the O'Connor O-box. Then someone recommended the Arri MFF-2 instead.

Any FF recommendations given the above?

Mark,

For your application I'd say the Chrosziel DV Studio Rig, I tried MANY FFses but at the that is the one I bought. Just be sure to buy the older 01S model which was manufactured when it sold for $1600+,
now they sell a cheaper version but it's not in the same league...

I mean if you could try my Chrosziel, you would NOT believe your eyes!

It essentially is the ONLY one I have ever tried which has essentially ZERO play!!!

It could be my unit is perfectly tuned but I bought it used and I have it since 2011!!!

Next best thing is the Petroff or the Petroff made Zacuto FF.

Both have the LOWEST amount of play and work well with small primes and with their ratio they increase the rotation on wider still photo lenses which notoriously have short rotation...

The ARRI MFF-2 is solid but I used 2 of these and both had a little more play I had hoped...It could be rental abuse but why I never experienced it with Chrosziel and Zacuto?? ;)

Hope it helps!

Wow, much appreciated Tommaso – thats quite the recommendation!

Checking out the Chrosziel DV Studio Rig pronto...

Thanks for the info.

FWIW, I find the image quality in my set goes way up with a matte box - my older generation lenses seem to have a lot of light bouncing around them.

Saturation and sharpness are phenom now that I use one religiously.

For my Leica-R set (which all have the duclos cine-mod) I've been using 77mm screw-on filters and a 77mm screw-on rubber lens hood that is adjustable in terms of how far it sticks out, so it has worked well from wide to long focal lengths...not as effective as a mattebox with hard mattes, but it generally does good work and keeps things light on the front of the lens. I also occasionally use a french flag on an articulating arm that can provide further lens shading when the rubber hood isn't enough. All in all the system is hardly as pro as a full on matte box with filter trays, but for travel work, it's worked well enough. 77mm screw-in filters are a lot easier on the bank account too ;)

As we spoke about mattebox recently, what would be your call on my project?
I wnat to use my Red Pro Mattebox with my Leica R lenses all cinevised with a 77mm front thread.
I will buy the support from Red (http://www.red.com/store/products/matte-box-rod-support).
As I don't like donuts I plan to get a 95mm ring as I only have 110mm and 140mm rings now and to mount it on the lens with a 77mm to 95mm step-up ring.
Would you Guys have an advice to simplify the last part? Pics welcome please.
