  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

Building up a set myself now (just bought a NEW (like new in the shop, been stowed away for years there) 19mm version 2, a 35/1.4 II and a 28 latest version, oops) I heard from a local very respected Leica repair guy here in Holland that you can declick the iris , but on some lenses the aperture might close down automatically creeping slowely. Heard it from other sources as well. Anyone know about this ? Concerning the internal filters of the 19mm II; would it be possible to change the orange, blue and yellow filter for different versions of ND's ? Great thread !

Mick, I experienced the iris creep. I sent mine to Duclos and they were able to resolve the issue. Not sure exactly what he did.

I personally opted to keep the iris untouched on my set...not just the potential focus creep but keeping the lenses' resale value (all the other modifications are essentially cosmetic...screw-on fronts and pressed-on but removable focus gears). The Leicas do have half-stop increments as-is, which I figured I could ultimately live with. Not the full cine experience, but in the long run a valid choice, I thought.

I did the same for now, but FYI de-clicking can be restored.

Yeah, I dunno about de-clicking. The ring is so close to the mount, I doubt you could ever pull iris so what's the point?

Yesterday I went out to work on this little film I'm doing for my son's school... pro bono, one man crew. I put the Epic on monopod (Toia style) with side handle, RedVolts, Bomb and my mini set of Leica Summiluxes. It was so friggin awesome to work that way! I was moving around quickly, unencumbered and the monopod gave me steady shots while keeping me from getting tired.

I would like your opinion on mounts. I own the Optitek Nikon mount which is really solid. I have about 6 Leica R lenses that would require a new lens mount, or a new camera mount. My options are to use the leitax mounts and change then all to Nikon, or get the Cinemods Epic camera mount. My fear is that the leica camera mount would still exhibit play. There is no such fear in the Nikon Optitek one.

Any suggestions?

The 2 best mounts that I've seen are the Leitax - with Red's EF mount and the Allstar system. Both are rock solid, Allstar is great if you have a fleet of lenses in different mounts. Using the Allstar these days because it took Red a bit longer than I thought they would to ship the Ti - EF mount. Hanging on to my Leitax mounts for the moment as spares.

Has anyone used the Cinemods Leica R mount? How rigid is it? Does it hold the lenses firmly when a follow focus is in play?

I was at Samy's in Hollywood yesterday, they have a set of duclos-moddedleica r for sale. looks like they all had the leitax canon mounts.

Iris creep can happen on some lenses if declicked. There is some means preventing creep, that stops this from happening. No idea how or what but I know its possible.

David is right about iris creep. Matt at Duclos has got it all sorted out and that is just one of the reasons for getting him to do the conversions.

I saw 2 Elmarit-r 24 and BOTH had focus shift problem: Dslr locked on sturdy tripod, magnify x10, and see the image shifting when rack focus..(shifting, not "breathing").
I know the 24 hasn't the IQ of 19 or 28, but I thought all Leica lenses shared the same mechanical precision.
Is this a specific issue with the Elmarit-r 24?
