  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

[h=1][/h]thoughts on the
Leica 28-90mm f2.8-4.5 ASPH Vario Elmarit R
[h=1][/h][h=1][/h][h=1][/h]

nice zoom with interesting range, especially on 5K. doenst breath much, keeps its focus during zoom.
very sharp optics.
front doenst rotate, but move back and forward in a 'strange' way, but just ok to be usable
on my small Shoot35 mattebox. of course screw-on filters are also possible.
the focus and zoom ring dont move back and forward, which is important when you want to
add focusgears. most other designs have parts that move, that you don't want to move..
The only complaint i have is that the aperture changes as you zoom between 2.8 and 4.5...
it is a very sharp zoom, but a bit less 'character' than my other leica lenses.
i'm using this lens more than i though i would, as its a nice zoom range on 1 lens.

actually Kyocera, who if I'm not mistaken also made many of the Contax lenses

Yes Kyocera was Zeiss's partner in the Contax line. Actually it was Kyocera's decision to "end" Contax as we know it that forced Zeiss to make their still lenses only for other systems (Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc).

However, that is separate from Minolta's history with Leica: Minolta entered into a design and manufacture partnership with Leica at some point in the 70's and 80's. Some of the most famous lenses that came out of this partnership were:

24 2.8
35-70 zoom
70-210 F4 zoom

There are three 35-70 lenses, the OP asked about the later f4 lens, which is a Leica design, not Minolta. Its made by Kyocera.

Thanks Filip. Really appreciate the thoughts.

Is this the same lens?

Is it worth $1,200

I'd personally grab the Nikon 80-200 2.8. It's cheaper too.
Thanks for your input but thats a rather redundant reply since we are only talking about building sets of Leica glass in this thread. Which brings me back to my original question is the lens pictured the Leica ASPH Vario Elmarit R ? is there a difference between the Elmar and Elmarit?

Nikon 80-200 that Tome has got rid of already.

Thanks Sanjin, Perhaps you can let me know the difference between the Elmar and Elmarit ? Iv'e bought the Leica Elmar as pictured. I know is a compromise but just wondering if it was a safe investment?

I would recommend to read Erivn Puts a Leica expert reviews at his Leica Compendium Book that the first version you can download free here>>>>

Look at the pages 194 up to 200...

no, i was talking about the 28-90,
the picture is the 80-200 F4, which has a constant F4, and this version should be ok and easy for cinemod as the focusring and zoomring dont move,
only the front ,
i just bought a 80-200F4, but do not yet have it. pricing should be around 600-800 euro's, so 1200$ should be in A++ condition

I have a 80 200 mk3, its a very nice lens but is not a patch on the Leica, 70 180 or the 80 200 f4 at the same stop. Also in its native form it doesnt focus cinewise and has sort throw.

These lenses were converted at Opt Out Engineering in Bristol UK. The conversion is completely reversable, then gear ring clamps on, the gear it self has no screws through the teeth as its attached to an almuminium ring mounted on the lens it self. The 80mm front arnt yet fitted.

Iv'e been unable to locate Opt Out Engineering via the web. Can anyone provide me contact details? Thanks

Hey Matt,

Thanks a ton for your post, it inspired me to do the same. I just received the last lens of my Leica set..a mint 19mm (also cost me right around $2k, double/thrice what I spent for the others)! Love these lenses.

So I'm going to send them in for the Duclos Cinemod where they will get the focus gears. What follow focus system are you using? these lenses are so small and close to the mount/body of camera it seems the follow focus used has to have a very narrow profile.

Any help you can give would be appreciated!

-Dane
