  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

Finally able to mount my Leica-R lenses on the Epic...via the Ti Canon Mount. Its really a sweet combo. Off to shoot something.

Greg, do you have any test footage for your Leica's? For reference, I love the Cooke Look when given a choice, but I'm looking for a smaller/lighter/cheaper set of primes for a set of low-budget indie films I'm looking to produce, and your Leica set looks promising (either to rent or just gather the equivalent myself). I'd like to keep the total lens cost in the $20-25K range (or $200-250/day if renting).

Thanks! (And your set looks beautiful, nicely done!)

UPDATE: I realized I wasn't clear: I'm looking for actual motion footage. I find still lenses often look great...for stills. Then I see them in motion and...not so much.

I got the 100 tooth gears from www.servocity.com - mostly they provide parts for robots I think. I cut out the centers on a lathe and tapped 3 holes for nylon tipped 6-32 set screws. It was kind of a pain. In hindsight I should have just gone to Duclos, but I'd just finished a run of brutal jobs and needed a mindless shop project to unwind.

In the end Delrin lens gears like the ones Duclos uses are better since they are heat shrunk in place and exert even pressure, set screws can deform the round parts of the lens unless you use them very carefully and the metal gears are cut to very close tolerances.

Thanks Matt. In that case I will go with Duclos or similar, I am in the UK at the moment and have been chatting with Opt out engineering about getting it done.

I'm also putting a set of Leica's together. Iv'e just bought a Leica 80-200 F4 Vario -Elmar -R and Im wondering if I have made a good choice. Iv'e not received it yet but hoping to test it next week. I'm also keen to know the main differences between the Summicrons and the Elmarit series. I was hoping to put a budget Sumicon set together but the prices seem to have shot through the roof since this first post was published. Ive managed to get a 50mm F2 Summicron R3 for $580 but most a fetching $1,500 + on flea bay. Has any one got any good buying tips or advice on the different models I should look out for or avoid? - Thanks ;-)

The 80-200 is ok, but not in the same league as the 70-180 which is a true Leica. The 80-200 is made by Kyocera for Leica.

Trying to keep that one a secret. You just let the cat out of the bag.. :(

Hi Mathew, Once I get my Leica set together I'll be sending them to you for the mods. Do you mind if I have them sent direct from my sellers to you direct?

I'd hope so .. its 4x the price. That one will have to sit on the wish list for a little while :-(

Does anyone know the filter size on these Leicas? I have had the damnest time figuring out the filter/lens cap size on these online. Anyone know?

New Leica Headquarters

All the best Leica-R primes and zooms will be a sort of RELOADED production very soon at

the new Leica plant and headquarters building in Wezlar, Germany.

Also at Photokina Fair in September 2012 in Cologne Leica will announce a new APS-C camera that would be able to swap both Leica-M and Leica R lenses.

Advanced Photo System type-C (APS-C) is an image sensor format approximately equivalent in size to the Advanced Photo System "classic" size negatives.

These negatives were 25.1 × 16.7 mm and had an aspect ratio 3:2.

Hey Ian, What particular lenses are referring to? They all vary, and may vary amongst models depending on year:
Here are mine.

19mm Elmarit 3248XXX 82mm Thread
24mm Elmarit 3102XXX 60mm Thread
35mm Elmarit 3333XXX 55mm Thread
50mm Summicron 3338XXX 55mm Thread
90mm Elmarit 2335XXX 54mm Thread (Actually it says 55 mm, but its not. Not sure why this is. It just is. I bought a 54-55mm step up from B&H and went from there. Took me a couple months to figure this one out:P
135mm Elmarit 2306XXX 54mm Thread (Also needs the 54-55 step up)
100mm Elmarit 3410XXX 55mm Thread

Hope this helps

Here are some very simple "home movies" shot with Leica R lenses (50mm Summilux and 19mm Elmarit all wide open). I think this shows what the lenses are capable of. I'll try to post some real production footage soon:

Thanks, Greg! Looks beautiful, just what I was hoping for.

Quick question: I get that the housings for the R mount are better than the housings for the M mount, but is the glass itself better? Because it looks FAR easier to put together a decent set of lenses with the M mount, and Spacecam has an M mount for the Epic available to buy now, for about $1500.

A lot of the lenses have neither the E55 or E67 on them. I was thinking of the lenses that Matt Uhry mentioned at the start of the post.
