  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica-M mount lenses on EPIC

Dave,

as I did a little research above in the tread but of course that nothing is confirmed yet!!!???

Also I'm working to fix my Leica R to M adaptor (original Leitz 22228/500934) that means it would be able to swap all Leica R lenses (zooms and primes) on EPIC with that option.

More about it later.

Stay tuned.

Sanjin,

Why not use a Leica R mount or A mount system and put your R lenses on that. We use R mount lenses here which, as you know are fantastic. I do wish there where a way to use Leica M so look forward to hearing more about how/if this mount works and what Red's opinion of it is.

Dave,

this is just in the case if I have Leica M mount on Epic to extend range to wider than 35mm lenses with adding Leica R mount for M.

And of course that you can use a quality EOS to R (Novoflex) with Canon electronic mount for Epic to perform Leica R lenses in that way too.

No need for A mount at all.

Now when amazing news are spreading over the forum for possible very soon shipping of Epic-X during late August or early September

then I was playing a bit in Photoshop about another great lens mount option for Epic.

It's about a possibility of making Leica-M mount for Epic.

Keep in mind that I'm not an engineer but my main goal with this tread is just to give all of you one more great idea.

If technically this option would be possible to realize then it's about RED team to give a kind of "Green Light" for many third party lens mount makers

to decide and investigate further options and possibilities to make Leica-M mount for Epic.

That lens mount option would open possibility to use many of small and lightweight Leica-M rangefinder FF35mm manual focus lenses from Leica, Carl Zeiss and Voigtländer.

At the end to add that if we would get one day Leica-M mount on EPIC than is also possible to use Leica-M to Leica R adopter

and with that give another option to use many of lightweight and wonderful Leica-R and Angenieux LR lenses.

I'm sure that many world famous photographers would pretty much appreciate this amazing lens mount option.

Versus the LEICA SUMMILUX 24mm f/1.4 top

The LEICA SUMMILUX 24mm f/1.4 has a curved field, so landscapes shot at infinity are much, much softer at f/1.4 than this flat-field Nikon 24mm f/1.4G.

Shot indoors, that wouldn't matter very much.

Oddly, the LEICA SUMMILUX 24mm f/1.4 has more distortion than this NIKKOR!

If you have a Nikon, forget the LEICA lens. This Nikon lens is better, for one-third the price. If you don't have a Nikon, you can buy the Nikon 24/1.4 and a Nikon FX body or two for the same price as the SUMMILUX.

I ordered the mount (too excited by it) and pm jarred and RED to confirm if this mount is approved.
I called spacecam also, and their answer to that question is yes.
I also enquired about lens options .
the answer was what is stated on the site ,
Lens Mount System for fitting of M Series lenses to Epic Camera. Permits use of 16-18-21mm Tri Elmar F 4, (at 20mm or 21mm setting), 35mm Summarit F 2.5, 50mm Noctolux F 0.95 and all Leica M series lenses of longer focal lengths with no camera modifications.

Since I have 2 Leica M lens ready to roll in my dry box, I asked if those would work.

35 summicron f2 m ASPH - NO
50mm summilux m f1.4 ASPH - YES

anyway the prospect of being able to open up to f1.4 and get clean images is really exciting.

excuse my ignorance, but what would be the widest Leica M that could fit on that mount ?

Thanks!

Antoine

this is not approved.... never even seen it. Heard about it.. but warned we need to see it first if they intended to sell it.. was told they would not. And they are saying it is approved????

uggh.... I wish companies would just send us the mounts... so we could approve them, and get on with it. Knowing the history of the whole drama about cameras blowing up with Janky lens mounts I don't know why some 3rd parties decide to just wing it and put their customers' warranties in jeopardy.

We are here to help.. nothing makes me happier than for all you guys to have options out there... but going about it dishonestly and around the back door just pisses me off... Welcome to the doghouse.

Now that everyone knows how I feel about the situation...

Thanks Jarred,

I'm about to release an alternative lens mount and I'm not able to have it verified by RED. I know you guys are busy, but I tried to contact you and Deanan by PM and email in relation to another lens mount and no reply. Could you clarify who and how to contact RED for any 3rd party components?

Another advantage of M lenses over R lenses is speed on the wide end. Leica makes a Summilux M in 21mm and 24mm ... the widest Summilux R is 35mm. Big difference.

I would to be able to use a set of Summilux-M 21-35-50-70 and then Summicron 90 f2.0 on the Epic :)

3rd Parties can send product to me to get verified. We do not respond for requests like yours for pin outs, the keys to our custom protocol, mechanical drawings, or instructions on how to build a mount.... but we will always test 3rd party prototypes, give feedback on what needs to be fixed ( if anything ) and let the customers know if its good, or bad.

Jarred:

Could you let us know what we can reasonably expect as far as protocols to access your mount?

I don't think anyone expects the internal code for controlling lenses from the camera/lens mount to the lens - but external serial protocols to remotely control the iris and focus setting - through the camera - wouldn't seem to be much of a problem or IP issue. A specific example of what I am talking about is the way we control Canon lenses on that other mount - we simply send a two character text string to the mount over RS232 that says focus near, focus far or iris open, iris close - not much different than pressing the zoom buttons on the redmote. We have no access to the internal software of the mount or camera - we just get to tell it what we want it to do for us. I think you may already do something like that for the 3D rigs. It would also be great to have some access to camera functions in situations where we can't use the wireless Redmote and wonder what we would have to do to get communication protocols for the RS232 and/or Ethernet camera control.

I also have some interest in making some custom dumb mounts. It would be nice to know what your concerns are on the mechanical/electrical side. Other than the obvious need to NOT short the pogo pins - which is pretty easy to handle with a recess and/or insulating material - it is hard to see how else you can screw it up if you have any sort of brain.

There's always the possibility of shoving a screwdriver or something through the OLPF or sensor, but you can do that with the PL mount on too - it's a big hole that goes to the same place. Regarding mechanics, pretty much everybody's setup has all kinds of different crap bolted to the camera in all kinds of configurations (presumably that's why there are all those threaded holes) - it's one of the reason we like the Epic. And as far as electronics, besides the row of pogo pins on the back of the camera that are naked anytime you pull the Redmote off, you also have all of the HDMI, SDI, Ethernet, GPI, power, etc. connectors that are much more prone to operator f...ups than the pogos on the front that are only exposed during a mount change where you are obviously going to be pretty careful given the OLPF that is right there as well.

For that money You can get proper PL primes.

Jiri,

please don't derail this tread that is about a possibility to get some of Leica-M lenses on Epic.

Exactly. Leica M lenses are not cheap for sure, and they have some limitations in terms of marks and focus rotation ...

However, some of us already have some of them for our M9's -- also, let us not forget that M lenses are among the most
portable, optically extraordinary lenses and fully cover FF35 ... outperforming basically anything from Canon, Nikon and
pretty much any other lens not costing $10,000 ... $15,000 ... or even $20,000 or more per lens (like Cooke, MP, Leica C's).

In that sense, if I could get a mount that allowed Leica M lenses on an Epic and was Red-approved, I'd jump at it.

Tell me Jiri - setting aside the limitations of focus marks and rotation - can you tell me better optically performing PL lenses that
are f1.4 and cost $5-6,000 or less??? If so, I'd LOVE to hear about them!

Okay, I come out and say this, form only 28 years of experience, yet my opinion, refers to just that, my opinion in Still glass used in almost 3 decades...

The M and R Leica glass, was and will remain some of the bets glass in the world... however...

It simply can not stand next to the absurd image quality of the new MF S2 Leica Glass!!!

This new glass is made form dream land it self, and I'll be sure to prove it soon, in more then one way... ;)

I'll add, that I will no the rushing ion to mounting anything extraneous on to our Epic M's, especially M8, I don't want to get crucified by Gibby either he he.

Allstar will make Epic A-mount and it could use the same Leica Adaptor as the one for the RED ONE.
