Today we did some resolution testing (with adult supervision) to see how well the new Leica lenses perform for an upcoming feature. Of course the Alexa was included in the tests as required by law.

The Leica lenses perform better than any lens we have tested to date... beating the Master Primes and RED Pro Primes by just a bit.

No reason to get good lenses unless you are going to use them...

Come on guys, resolution doesn't matter.

Heh heh... even Arri Disagrees with you :)

" For comparison, HDTV has 1920 pixels per line. 4K (4096 pixels per line) scans are sometimes performed for VFX and some productions, Spider Man 2 for example, have been done entirely in this format. Looking at the digital files in Figure 1, a 4K scan definitely contains more details than a 2K scan. To guarantee that all details from the scene are captured a 4K scan is necessary. "

That's amazing. What's also very noticeable is the increase in contrast Epic affords in the 2K and below range. No one can argue that we don't see level of resolution in a theatre. Epics 4.2K measured resolution helps improve resolution at the 1, 1.5 and 2K levels in a dramatic way.

Really, BRAVO to the Red Team!

And you guys thought I was exaggerating about these Leicas! :w00t:

The scary part is, you don't have to look at these lenses at center crop at T4... they are sharp as hell wide open, and in the corners, with little distortion on the wide end.

These tests were shot at T2.8 :)

awesome!!!
I'd love to see this same info for RPPs :-) I have a hunch my investment in Red glass is exceedingly good and Epic will help show the wisdom of picking Red for optics. I'm betting it's slightly less than the Leicas but for what, 1/8 the cost?

The Leica's are the new 10's. RPPs are now a 9.8 in resolution.

I just wish the Leicas were available for immediate delivery, I've heard a year or more if you ordered today.
Moreover, I firmly believe that after more people see images created with Epic and the Leicas the demand will increase substantially.
What do I base this on? I have seen the images.

Cheers - #19

Of note... RPPs are less than 1/6th the cost. But props to the Leicas...

Definitely NOT "Unobtainium".

Jim

Made by teutonic elves out of unobtanium, magic faerie dust and transparent aluminum with dragon tear lens coatings.
Ohhhh I do covet them so.

Interesting note... with the best lenses on the planet, EPIC is 5 times the resolution of it's primary competitor (HxV).

I've heard that that is a small amount... :-)
