  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LED vs. Fluorescent Lighting

That may be, would like to know which one is as strong as a spotted up 1.2 hmi par, and as any Gaffer will tell you, a led light is still not as versatile as most hmi's.

This are prototypes I'm currently testing, but even the current offerings from Lednardo and Arri are not too shabby, of course HMI is HMI, as LED are LED, no discussions here, we are talking about light produce to illuminate a scene, and for me as DP, I don't have to listen to Gaffers, as I tell them what to use, and when all possible I suggest other DP's what to try and why, if they like it they can use it if not , well they don't, I'l always sale the LED's vs. any other fixture, for more then one reason, this of course when possible, if I need to overcome the mid day Sun, well, then I'll need more power then any current LED fixture can provide, no doubt, but at 90% I'm only using LED's.

As far as versatility power for power, you'll be mazed of what you can pul off with LED's that you never can with HMI's.

Very true.

One must not confuse their own style of lighting as being the only way of doing things and try to lead others down the same path. Unless of course, they are trying to match that specific style.
There are many tools available for us to work with - the best solution is not to start with a bias against others, but to work with the strengths of each fixture or source. Sometimes, that means working with just a bounce. Sometimes practicals. Other times, painting the scene with lights involves a number of different types working together - HMI, plasma, fluorescent, LED's - even some tungsten fresnels, china balls, rotating gobo's, flexible pads and / or theatrical fixtures (just a few of many choices). Each has a role in the right situation.
The best in the field know better than to dismiss a category of lighting sources by simply comparing the lumen output. The way a reflector or lens shapes the light before the gaffer even begins to modify the pattern or texture can be important to the look of a particular shot.

I will never argue that each of us has their own way of approaching a scene - and that includes how we choose our favorite illumination sources as a starting point.
Or, in some cases, by removing light that is already there.
My point is that the selection of fixture - and how it is used - is a matter of personal preference. What is right for one is not the bible for all.

Experiment. Learn what works for you - and then refine it to create great images.

Agree with you completely, and no one is confusing anything here, just proposing and sharing my opinions on something I know some great deal about it, and sharing my tough and findings, for others to consider, then its all up to them what they do with it, lights are like cameras, some prefer RED some prefer Alexa, as simple as that, I don't use Tungsten or any light other then 5600k, that is my choice, if others like the way my work looks then I'm good.

Dear Ketch,
i love your work and specialy your lighting and I do take note of what you have to offer on the reduser.
i love the versatility of the LED lights but so far I'm having problem finding strong enough fixtures to help me out in out door scenes.
could you please let me know about the strongest LED fixtures tat you know of?
thank you

Thanks Shapour,

I have had no problem lighting outdoor scenes, when this are to illuminate small areas and subjects closer to the camera, and I'll be soon sharing a Group Buy on this new fixtures I am currently testing, but this are not Spot, but Soft, which is all I would ever use on any of my talent, however to overcome the strong daylight of the Sun on a large area there is no LED that can do that for you as of today, only some of the strongest HMI's have the power.

Also a series of new Videos will be coming once we finish rebuilding our site, and this will also include Behind the Scenes and how I do what I do, including the use of Camera, lenses, accessories, support gear, all kind of stuff and of course Indoor and Outdoor Lighting technics I have been using for years and how I am evolving with it in the use of LED's and why..

...All tools have their place.

On this we surely agree.

Good because I just confirmed that I'll do it, just remember this are not knockoffs, are in fact the absolute very best I have ever used and best built, so they will not be cheap, but a 15% or so discount on them will make them a good deal, Litepanels, LED's and just about any other one out there can be lit up, but this fixture in day or night... ;)

Just keep an eye out end of next week on the Accessories section... ;)

And here they are.... "AREA 48 SOFT" LED panels, all info about the Group buy will be posted in the next few days in the DSMC Accessories section of this Forum!

How powerful? Size and weight? Hints on general price level?

This are just now been completely finished and ready for production, and there is a little more candy to them then specs on that showed on the site linked above.

Price range is below litepanel's 1x1 fixture which is around 2.7k, but far superior in all aspects, and then there is the Group Discount based on quantities which will make it the absolute best buy for the highest quality LED fixture and pure HIGH CRI true 3200k or 5600k LED, I expect to be ready by end of next week, with some Shots of Monochrome to go with it.
