  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LED Fresnel Conversions - Visionsmith

I've got a ReLamp 2k 5600k in an old Mole fixture and I'm pleased with it. Mostly just using it for corporate interviews and doc jobs where we don't have the budget for Joker Bugs or an Arri 1200 or higher. Anyway nice light to shoot through a silk for an interview.

It's performed well, no problems at all. My only dislike is that there is a warm ring around the light. Not a huge deal since it's usually cropped off with the barn doors but it's certainly there.

I've got a couple heavy duty, old school Junior 2K Mole 412s with the proper Fresnel lenses just waiting for re-lamping. Just wish Visionsmith, or somebody, could make a profit selling them for a more reasonable price than $1,000/lamp.

Does anyone know of any other options out there? I'm not expecting $40 each like the regular tungsten, and I respect what it takes to create high output, high CRI daylight. That said, I feel like they're trying to get all their NRE back on the first 100 sold.

I agree... I actually purchased it but returned it before I had the chance to use it, $1,000 was def hard to swallow & could was better off being allocated to different things at the time. I was thinking of reaching out to Pete at vision smith about a group buy. He told me unofficially a few months ago that he had a 5K version slated to be released around this time.

Furthur to my earlier post about relamping a 5K fresnel with a 2K LED, I emailed the manufacturer-vendor about a centering adaptor for fitting a 2K G38 base LED into a 5K lamphouse. Here is a copy of the discourse which may be of interest.

Hello again.

This is just a short enquiry to ask if 240vAC versions of your relamp products have been progressed. I am examining relamping an old 5K fresnel with a 2K LED centre as well as some 650w ARRI-style fresnels. The optical centre for a 2K G38 base is higher for the 5K lamp, ie., in the body of the lamp, the face of the G38 base is lower.

Have you contemplated offering modifed G38 bases for folk who may want to relamp their 5Ks with lower powered 2K LEDs. I don't know if there is enough space for a bridge adaptor to fit in the G38 pin slockets without a rearwards or forwards offset in a letter "N" shape which would then adversely affect range of available focus movement of the lamp.

Regards from Western Australia and all the best for Christmas-New Year.

Hi Bob,

Yes, in January we will announce (Shipping in February) a ReLamp unit which is our 2K with extra long ‘prongs’ to fit in a 5K and reach the center of the fixture. We are considering naming it the ‘2.5K’.

Merry Christmas!
Pete

Just had my Relamp go down for the second time. Had it on a job shooting an interview, moved the stand over about a foot and the light turns off. Sent it in for an RMA, got back my 2K ReLamp. Again had it on a job, needed to move the stand over by a foot...and it shuts off. I've put it in 2x fixtures that are nearly new...and it's still down. SO waiting for another RMA from Vision Smith.

Right before this went down a 2nd time I was thinking of buying an additional ReLamp since before it broke I was using it on almost every job. I'll report back if I get any info on why it went down for those interested in this light.

I'm 90% sure these are fully dimmable using standard dimmers.

Edit - "This LED Lamp is a direct replacement of the 1000W EGT Halogen Lamp. The upgraded light draws only 150 watts and supports external legacy dimmers, requiring no change to infrastructure. "

It seems like VisionSmith has the classic problem with short run manufacturing. Typically, the only way to get to lower price points is economies of scale. If the proposition was 10,000 units for 1,000,000 USD to reach a $100 per unit target, would you put a million bucks on the line not knowing how many you could sell? Assuming other costs added $25/unit and you sold them for $250/each, you'd make $125 net on each one. Nothing wrong with that, but until you sell the first 5,000 your investment is at risk. Moreover, how do you prove out market capacity in advance?

That's unfortunate to hear Rob. I've had nothing but a good experience using my 1Ks. I had maybe one odd issue with one of them that lasted for less than a minute, but it wasn't on a shoot and I never saw it happen again. Pete is very helpful and open to fixing any problems if you email him.

Gents was just looking at these, I know it's an old thread, but wondering how people got on?

I ended up selling my 2k relamp off. It went down a couple of times, but then I finally got a "good version" that worked for a long while (which I sold off). Nice enough light, but after it went down on set that first couple of times I no longer trusted it and had it on the truck for when I needed a quick ambient bounce.
