Hello,

I am for the lack of a better word a "one man show" - write, direct, edit, color all by my self. That said, I use a lot of Da Vinci Resolve for my coloring work, since purchasing my Epic I have continually tried to work with it - using Premiere and the RMD files it's been getting better. I typically bring my R3D files into Premiere and edit them directly onto a 1080/24fps timeline and it works for me.

What I really would like to know does RCX support any of the control surfaces like Resolve. I am looking for an Element or Avid Color surface for resolve but if they work with RCX it would be great. I really hate trying to do fine grading with the mouse. Or am I looking at RCX wrong and it's not really a grading tool?

Thanks

Tom Chase

Hey tom,

I consider RCX a one light or best light tool. Resolve is a full grading app. RCX gets you in the ballpark for dailies.

To be honest Tom, you typically won't be changing much other than ISO, white balance, contrast, or shadow. That is usually sufficient for a first pass. Couple of clicks and a slider and you're out of there.

So what about control surfaces do you know if it supports them?

Yes, RCX supports control surfaces. I can tell you from my own experience that it supports the Avid MC Color panel and the Tangent Wave panel. I've not used it with any others, so I can't say for sure, but if you download the app and look in the manual, I'm sure there is more info there.

@D Fuller - the Wave and Avid Artist Color are the two in my price range. What's your thought on the Avid one? I mainly do most of my heavy grading in Resolve, but I noticed that RCX seems to handle underexposed on black backgrounds better than Resolve - but that just may me be.

Thanks

Tom

Avid works well with RCX, once you tweak the response. Out of the box (at least for me) the response to the rings and trackballs was too sensitive, but all that is adjustable in RCX. (You can also completely re-map the panel if you want to.)

I've read reports of people having trouble with the ethernet interface, but that has not been the case for me at all. It has worked perfectly. You may know this already, but you have to install a background app, EuControl that manages control of the Avid Panel for the OS. I found that the most recent version of EuControl (v3.x) did not work well with Resolve. (v9 at the time) But the second-most-recent (v2.7.1) worked perfectly with everything. this is under OS-X 10.8.5. I have since upgraded to Resolve 10, and everything continues to work together, so I've never tried EuContol 3.x with Resolve 10.
