Hi all,

The outputs on my camera (LCD and bith HD-SDis and the 720p) take on whatever current camera settings during playback. If my camera was set to 2000 asa to shoot and when i playback other clips recorded on 320asa..the playback picture takes on the camera settings, playing back the clip at 2000 asa..the applies to the other metadata like color temperature etc. Never experienced it before. Is it normal?

cheers,

yean

Yup.. normal. The alternative would be to use the recorded metadata of course.

It would - in my opinion - be far better for playback to use the recorded metadata rather than the current camera settings, for what I imagine would be pretty obvious reasons - that's how the clip was intended to be seen!

That said, it's not a major problem (of course), but if it can be changed in future build it would be a good idea, imho...

I find the way it is at the moment very very valuable. If we get significant encoding (and display) curve changes with 16 I may change my opinion but at the moment please leave it be..

Hi Michael,

Care to elaborate on what you find useful - I can't see any real use for playing back clips at a different "asa" than they were exposed for (at least generally)... What am I missing here?

Cheers,
Dom.

Hi Dom

I would defer to GN on most things (and especially whisky, maths and code). However I don't find the display gamma (no apparent knee to force all recorded highlight values into the preview out) .... and the spatial (not levels) threshold for the over-exposing traffic highlights work for me as well as I would like. I'm not complaining about it though because I have the ability to replay a shot with a different ASA value (typically 200/250) to double check highlight loss..

After a fair bit of exposure testing I am exposing Red (in middle to high dynamic range scenes by taking a few risks and double checking the shot with a different ASA value. Outside playing with it in Redcine I can find no other way to be sure while taking risks with highlights (to avoid noise)

Give me user definable 3d Luts (that can map the full range of encoded values ) that can be loaded independently into the different outputs and I'll let it go...:shifty:
warm regards

Michael

The advantage would be that you can playback the clips with any settings you desire (since the reality is there are no real settings in the clip) by simply changing the asa and other settings prior to playback.

Personally I never use in-camera playback, we reserve this for our MBPro's on set after the drives have been removed from the camera.

True... and you can do this at the moment.. what I hope we don't get is the clip playing locked to its as shot meta data..

As for using a download station for checking ? With the camera you can spin to a questionable highlight in seconds before needing to move on. Holding a set-up while loading the shot somewhere else is less desirable for me.

kind regards

Michael

PS Sorry to ask Greg ... but what MB are you using with you Ultra 12mm?

Yes, I agree... I guess this is just a habit as I am not used to playback in a 35mm camera w/o asking the video guy to playback, combined with my fear of corrupting data that causes me to use our MBpros to review shots. It works for me, everyone will work a bit differently.

Currently I use gaffers tape! Actually I have only used the lens a few times and we just taped ND to the front and shot, but I do plan on adding another mattebox. the MB20 is too small.

Ah, yes - I certainly wouldn't want it locked to recorded metadata, but that would be a nice default, nonetheless...

Thanks for the replies Michael (and Greg) - always good to know what others are getting up to with their kit!

Gotta say I agree wholeheartedly with Dominic on this one... if I shoot something indoors with low tungsten light and and then shoot something outdoors in the sun, I definitely don't want to have to change the bleedin camera settings every time I watch a clip just to see how it was properly exposed and balanced on set. It's like the HVX and not being able to watch clips at a different frame rate than what the camera is currently "set" to... next to useless.

Being able to switch color and exposure "on the fly" is fun and a nice way to illustrate to onlookers that the RAW data is completely manageable in post, but it's not a whole lot useful for much else than that. I absolutely use in-camera playback to check that a shot is exactly how the director wants it; this may not be standard "film workflow," but then again isn't that the whole point of shooting digitally - to free ourselves from those limitations?

I don't see a reason to "lock" playback to the recorded metadata either, but certainly it should always play back from whatever settings you've already fed it. IMO this is one of the very few remaining annoyances the camera exhibits.

Thanks

I'm trying to find a non-arri solution but so far have failed.. I'll PM you if I find anything that works..
