We finally got the chance to snap some shots of our Monstercine Hydra 5-Way Quick Release Clamp in a variety of configs with the Red LCD on 19mm rods - the 15mm version works in the identical fashion. For those of you who have asked, the rotating collar opposite the rod clamp end provides the clamping force to constrict and lock the spud or 15mm rod in all 5 hole directions at once.

Birns & Sawyer is our new world wide distributer so you can now purchase from our site at monstercine.com, on the B&S site at birnsandsawyer.com, or in the LA B&S retail shop. Their new line of Red products is very cool!

If anybody gets a chance to use the Hydra with an EVF or other accessory, please post some pics - we'd greatly appreciate it.

New product suggestion:

How about offering a set of bolts with your nifty thumb tightening head to replace the hex-head bolts on the Red Side Handles. You would sell these to every single owner of the Red handles.

Greg,

We can do that! You'll be our first customer. Those little stainless paddles would be perfect for that use, albeit a little larger.

That would be excellent... I expect you'll sell 100's/1000's to most Red owners!

There was a previous suggestion for clamping levers on the side handles here:

There was a general issue of getting them small enough and also there is a problem with the bottom clamping lever on the side handle that sits above the pan handles.

If you ask me, I think the side handles should have been either made similiar to the universal mounts with a similiar clamping lever or if the rod attachment assembly needs to be in two piece, I'd have made the locking screws as clamping levers put put them horizontal instead vertical as they are now.

Next,

More important is getting a solution for the Red cradle that doesn't require an allen key.

EVERYONE will want a solution that doesn't require allen keys for the Red cradle and side handles!!!!

Cheers,

Can this hold the weight of the EVF?

That's a great question that we'd love to get answered because it can certainly hold the weight. We haven't received our EVF yet and we're eager to know as well.

The Hydra and Quick Spud should work well with the EVF. In our initial testing, the clamp comfortably held a hundred+ pounds, but the real issue is the amount of positive friction we can achieve with 190 or so degrees of gripping contact against a low friction rod surface.

Negative gripping force(slippage) is incremental and dependent upon the amount of leverage applied to the clamp and how far the weight or force is from the rod axis - the greater the leverage, the greater potential to slip on the rod.

Because the quick release holes offer a variety of mounting options and the EVF generally mounts close to the camera body, I imagine the Hydra should easily hold the EVF in place without slipping and make it very flexible to reconfigure.

If anybody wants to test the Hydra with the EVF and do a review with pics, we'll happily send you a free Monstercine T-shirt and a Cyclops Focus Hook or set of 19-15mm reduction sleeves for your effort.

We received our MonsterCine grips yesterday and I am very pleased. We also have the Zacuto setup and they are completely interchangeable.

As far as the EVF goes, it works fine, but is not the ideal mount. I much prefer the ET EVF mount.

The advantages of the MonsterCine clamp over Zacuto are obvious. First the build quality is better, but the big difference is the ability to clamp the MonsterCine clamp virtually anywhere you have an exposed 19mm rod. Whereas the Zacuto setup can oly go on the end of a rod w/o dissasembly.

The only thing I dont like about the MonsterCine gear is the length of the parts. This is a very minor issue but if the clamp was just slightly shorter it would be ideal. Also the spud is very long, it could be 1/2 the length. I prefer the Zacuto spuds as they are the perfect length (only wish they looked as good as the MonsterCine spud and were black).

I am using a combination of the two systems and it works great. As MC is missing the items below to complete the system. I have the spuds permanently mounted on both ends of my Red Arms, and use them as a quick release with the Zacuto Zicro Mount. I have 3 LCDS and all have the Zicro Mount permanently installed as well, which creates the ultimate quick release system. No more unscrewing the LCD from the arm every time you disassemble the camera.

Overall, this is a great product and a must have for your Red camera package. I'll post some photos later today.

NOTE TO JIM:
add the following products and you will have a complete package;
1. 3/8" spuds
2. shorter spuds
3. ZicroMount type device (only better looking and black)

Great stuff Greg! Can't wait to see the photos and hear more feedback.

As far as the spud length goes, we'll be offering a shorter version soon and we'll also make the current version one available too. The length was chosen to provide greater stability in the Hydra and it works very well with the 19-15mm sleeves.

The 3/8 spud is coming in a week or so...

Here are a few quick shots of the MonsterCine Hydra mixed with Zacuto parts. I have spuds attached to both ends my Arms and Zacuto Zicro mounts on all my LCD's which creates a quick release mounting system for the monitors. The EVF is too heavy to work effectively with the Hydra clamp, if the Hydra was shorter it might work better, but the ET EVF mount is a much better choice.

Updated Monstercine Hydra

Updated Monstercine Hydra

We'll be releasing our next generation of Monstercine Hydra clamps next week. In this gen we have upgraded the smaller paddle handle on the 5-way spud collar end with a wider, smoother one-piece stainless handle. We're also working on a smaller version of our new Quick Key handle to replace the main clamp key on the Hydra for increased tightening leverage.

*If you purchase a Hydra in either 15mm or 19mm jaw sizes before August 1st 2008, we will send you a free Quick Key upgrade as soon as they are available. Just mention "FREE QUICK KEY UPGRADE" in your paypal purchasing info box.

**If you already own a Hydra, the Quick Key upgrade price will be available to you at a discounted price of $16 until August 1st 2008. Price after August 1st 2008 is $26.

This little thing is so bad ass I love mine.

I wish I had more but i dont need more really.

So fun to play with and very useful.

Any update on the SHORTER spuds? I would get a whole bunch

Zak,

If you're referring to the spud length listed on the site, that's inaccurate and needs to be corrected. The spuds are actually only 1 5/8", not 3" as the site describes.

As for shorter spuds, we've not made any but we'll happily cut them shorter and re-anodize some if you can get a group together to buy at least two dozen. They are already manufactured and it would take some hand work to modify.

Next batch I promise we'll make some shorter ones!

Monstercine 3/8 Quick Spud now available

Monstercine 3/8 Quick Spud now available

We've just released our new 3/8 threaded Quick Spud with the same 15mm outside diameter as the 1/4-20 version. The only difference is a slightly larger collar and larger threaded hole. The 3/8 version is available for immediate order by contacting gretchen at monstercine dot com or ordering off the site sometime next week once we get it updated with all of our new products.

I swear we'll get the site updated this week...
