Does anyone have any good suggestions for mounting the LCD to the side of the camera? I definitely don't want it on top of the rig and i'd like a clean easy way to mount it off the side.

Wooden Camera's solution seems pretty limited (seen here: http://woodencamera.com/easy-stick)

Ideally mounting to something with a Magic-arms capability would be good or just a bracket that positioned it a little lower and to the side like where the viewfinder would go.

If you have any ideas or links pass them along! Maybe a good bracket that can be solidly mounted to a magic arm or something?

If you're looking for a simple solution, I think Wooden Camera's solution is pretty convenient. I understand that you think it's limited, so could you tell us what additional features you're looking for in the mount?

I personally really like the way RED has their EPIC rig setup in their retail store at RED Studios. I'll see if I can find a photo of it somewhere. They use a rail system at the top of the camera with a handle in the middle and the LCD off to the right. I plan on building my rig similar to this.

Okay, I know the quality isn't too great, but here's what it looks like:

Ya, that would be fine on a tripod but I think it would be really high on a shoulder mount. I don't want to have to un-mount it and re-mount it, I was thinking of using the SAFETY NATO and NATO clamp from Wooden Camera, if I got two Safety Nato's I could quickly adapt the location of the monitor with just a thumbscrew. You can also mount that Nato Clamp to a magic arm if necessary... I'm just curious if others have any other setups for monitor mounts as I want as much flexibility as quickly as possible.

I use Ultralight arms for everything. They're relatively cheap, hold tighter than a Noga/Israeli arm, and are generally badass. The rubber gaskets at the base of the threads are also really wonderful for keeping your monitor in place. Plus, the "Monitor mount" component has those little nubby teeth that keep the monitor at an even flat plane, which really helpful as well.

edit - Not sure if this would work for the Red touchscreen LCD though. I'm not really sure what the bottom of the mount looks like, and for LCD-as-viewfinder purposes it's much more convenient to use a monitor that's capable of being underslung.

Is this what you're talking about Justin? http://www.ulcs.com/armclamp.html

I'm sure it will be easier to find a solution once I have the LCD in hand but I wanted to at least begin a discussion as there are a fair amount of Epics in the wild already, i'm sure some info exists on some different mounts.

Yes. I buy them either at FilmTools (www.filmtools.com) or in a pinch at Samy's Camera (www.samyscamera.com). They're really wonderful in how modular they are. For my stills setup of the Scarlet I plan to use the SmallHD DP4 EVF mounted on top with just the UltraLight 1/4 20 balls and one dual clamp.

you can do what I think you want with.... (from RED)

This was our aproach .... I feel the touch screeens are too fragile to swing around on a nogu arm...

We have embraced the rails system and find it works well without the weight of Rods up top

M

PS the aditional advantages of the above system is that you can suport alot of weight from the dogbone so you can use it as a adhoc handle...

I'm having a very unique arm custom built for me right now. I hate the noga/Israeli arms for they always break down. I do like the Ultralight arm, but find them too bulky. Also, with either of those solutions it's hard to hang the monitor low when rigged from the top and trying to tilt the screen without hitting all the crap in the way. I'll post soon, but what the guy is doing for me blows anything out of the water. Simple, elegant, practical, light weight, and very, very fast. I'm trying to convince the guy to make more and sell them. I'm not interested in selling them myself, but I think when people see it, anyone using a monitor will want one. ETA - about 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for the links Michael... looks like an approach, i'd love to see it all put together.

sounds interesting, be sure to post photos/details whenever you are able to. It's a niche product but I think there could be a demand if done well.

The difficulty with the Red system is that it will cost about $650 just to mount your monitor. It also seems a tad over engineered for such a simple task. The noga arm off the red handle will do just fine.

For the side of the camera, side bars and the RED arm to the LCD?

I'm in agreement on the price to mount a monitor or handle. Luckily I have some experience as a home shop machinist and tinkerer. Maybe some magnesium parts are what I'll make, I have a lot of magnesium stock and I really think its cooler than boring aluminum anyhow. Mag parts weigh about half of Al parts, I wish the scarlet case was Mg, it would be so light.
I also noticed that eBay has deals on various mounting hardware nick knacks, from red china of course . Doesn't change image quality, so I'm ok with it.:wink5:

sorry I just saw this... PM me reminder and I'll take a snap tomorrow.

It may be a bit pricy but it is solid and I've had 2 screens damaged becuase they where on a nogu arm.

Hi Brad,

How are things?

After seeing so many Epic/Scarlet pics around it's funny how few have the LCD mounted on the side. I can only assume it's because of a need to share the LCD with the AC.

Being the cheap guy that I am, I'm planning on mounting the red arm directly to the Brook VF base plate on the side. You could also go with the Wooden Camera easy riser. That was the cheapest solution I could come up with.

Once the camera arrives we will take a better look at alternate mounting options.

Doing well, excited for the scarlet. We should get together sometime soon and chat, i'll pop by the school once i'm back in town. Seems like a solid Noga arm would work in a pinch but i'm still not sold on one option or another. Going to wait for the gear to come in and decide once it's in hand.

Zacuto Zandy 19/15mm and GINI-RIG Monitor arm. Rock solid, does not loosen up like an arm and can be moved around in a few seconds to the lower 19mm rods for handheld or quickly removed without tools.

And with the GINI-Rigs you also get a fantastic, really well-made Follow Focus, a decent shoulder mount and 15mm rods and... Plus if you also shoot DSLR these rigs are perfect for that. I've bought 3 rigs from him and they are great.

http://store.zacuto.com/zandy.html Needed for 19mm rods. Or if you are 15mm then GINI's new monitor arm has built-in 15mm clamp.
