  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've been looking for a while now to find a small case for the LCD. Has anyone found any good solutions? I'm looking for something JUST BIG ENOUGH to hold the LCD, almost like how a glasses case holds a pair of glasses. hard and protective and super small
 
Have you look into Pelican cases? You would want at least 1.5" of foam around the LCD to protect it.

An old trick for cutting out you own foam (get closed cell foam) is to use an electrict carving knife it does a better job then a hacksaw blade.
 
I intend to store it with the case holding the body (in its own foam compartment), mostly. Interesting idea, though, getting a smaller pelican. Then it can be treated less delicately (like when an AC drops the body back into the case as he's taking it out!).
 
Why not make yourself a neoprene sleeve to put it in?

I'm going to be carrying my RED in the same backpack. That pack is awesome. I went to LART with it and carried tons of gear with me, it was insane, easy to manage and I didn't mind walking through airports with it on my back and fully loaded.

I had no trouble on an Airbus A319. Most all overhead storage bins will be fine (with planes that fly in and out of N. America), they have to meet the FAA regulations for depth and height and overall volume of the storage bins. I had a very full (bulging) pack that was over-weight and it was a tight fit, but it did fit. The notebook I brought was a 15" MBP, so most PC notebooks will be thicker, some 1" or more and this really could make the difference with a very full pack. Worst-case scenario is you pull the laptop from the bag before you stow it overhead. The laptop can ride at your feet and you can use it during the flight anyway.

If you don't over-load this bag to where it's bulging (this can be hard on your laptop and gear anyway), you should be just fine, no matter what notebook you have. If it's a Macbook Pro or one of similar thickness, you shouldn't have any worries at all.
 
Thanks Jeff, I have a 15" MBP, good to know it should fit. This is a timely thread was about to buy a 1510 Pelican and a backpack, this is a much more elegant solution
 
I have been all over the world with my RED in a tamrac cyberpack 8 backpack. Ditto what Jeff says... My backpack is always bulging and over weight. A couple times I needed to remove the laptop to squeeze it into the overhead compartment. On two commuter flights I had to valet check the backpack plane side but I removed the camera and carried it on board. If you must fly on a small plane ask the flight crew nicely if they will let you put the backpack in the on-board storage closet. In my experience they are very accommodating.
