My LCD cable has something attached to it covered by heat shrink. I haven't seen this on anyone else's cables so I'm assuming its been taken off. What is it exactly?

It's a Ferrite, DON'T take it off. Older early model cables don't have it, hence why you've never noticed it. It prevents interference.

Yes.
I have four EVF and LCD cables. Only the newest one, which shipped with the EVF, has the humbucker on it. I was thinking that I'd ask the boys at Red to send along another three.
These ferrite cores have become common on ARRI power cables in recent years (think it's mandated by the EU)
It is a good thing.
Cheers,
Harry

The ferrite suppresses EMI coming out of the camera and LCD. The RF noise that is typically contained inside the enclosures for the camera and LCD basically go out through the connectors and then latch onto the LCD wire and act as a big antenna. My guess is that they did some EMI testing and found that it was causing all sorts of noise. The ferrite bead basically kills the antenna effect of the wire and makes the system play nice with pace makers etc :)

Dang, because its kinda huge and doesn't look nice. Wish it would right next to one of the connectors instead of right in the middle of the cable.

If I take it off.... What will happen?

People's heads will explode and fire will reign from the sky.... That or your cell phone and audio equipment may get crackle sounds every once in a while :) I'm sure it would be fine, the FCC is fairly mundane about interference issues and half the time its useless because so many companies get FCC certified then change their products before they ship anyway.
