I realize that the LCD cable works great when mounting in the 'default' position.

However, after getting a rig set up, that may no longer be the perfect position.

I'm still researching the 'best' and most affordable rig, so I don't exactly know what length I'll need.

What is a 'safe' length of cable to buy, to be able to transition to a full rig?

Or should I just go with the default cable, and worry about that later, and get the 'perfect' length for whatever rig I buy?

there is no "default" cable, although it says 12", RED will ship your touch with whatever cable they have in stock, for instance I got my package with 7" cable, and it's short, now i have to buy 12"

Paramon - that is not exactly the case. You need to note that when buying the LCD with the package - it comes with 7" cable. When buying the LCD as stand-alone it comes with the 12" one...
I find the 12" sufficient for most configs - even shoulder-mount...

So, the 12" is not too long for mounting on top of the camera and not too short for a left side shoulder mount?

That's useful to know, didn't want to get the wrong size.

I got a package and mine came with a 12"

7 Inch length Touch cable in my opinion is lame. The default position, as mentioned in this thread is fine for tripod but start mounting on the shoulder it becomes useless. Unfortunately I got the 7 inch with my package & ended up buying the 18inch version $260 later just to overcome the limitations of the 7 inch.

Peter - i started to buy acessories way before Nov 3rd, and i didn't buy a package, I got 7 " cable with my red touch,

Hey RED, an 18" angle to angle would be cool

My bad... And apology...

I just wanted to point out that many people miss the small details (7" officially shipping with the package vs 12" shipping in the standalone version as per the RED STORE)...

The 12" is long enough even for shoulder mount (unless you have some crazy config mounting the LCD way too far from the body) - just remember to mount the base with the plug towards the camera. Since the LCD swivels 360˚ it does not matter how you mount it...
