  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Latest Scarlet Beta firmware = 5K FF 24fps!!! @ 9:1 Compression

I think RED Team has made their point here but if anybody is still amused by the phenomenon that is 5K 24fps Scarlets... Tonight my Scarlet did it all over again, and I did get video evidence and more underexposed R3Ds. There's no trigger that I can figure out, all I know is the camera starts up into varispeed mode despite being at the project timebase, then you switch resolutions and you suddenly have additional framerates. Video link added to first post.

Next time you get into 5K 24fps please get a shot of time. Slate/timecode or whatever, so you can verify its actually being shot at 24 fps. I watched the clips and it really as mentioned earlier by others looks like 12 fps varied to 24 and you just have meta information that's wrong.

You can get to the bottom of this pretty quickly by shooting timecode and also showing look around on your monitor so it also verifies its not just in 4K with the wrong menu listed on the top.

Now was this after installing the newest released firmware after they took 5.2.9 down and put it back up?

No, I did it one more time before doing the reinstall. It's done now guys, Jarred has PM'ed me about it and I've already upgraded to the newer version of 5.2.9. It's not going to happen again. I have a couple of other long R3Ds. I'll post them in shortened R3D trims since people keep not believing that it's really recording 24/39, and I think I would know the FOV of my 24mm at 5K vs 4K in the room where I do all my little tests. It's 5K. But please everyone, I'm afraid this is mostly done with. We're not about to Magic Lantern our way into 5K. Let's allow RED to do it if it's possible.

Also, my phone has its own weird variable framerate thing. The timecode on the video clip won't do you guys any good. Basically when my phone slows its shutter speed, its framerate goes down too, so in premiere it over and undercranks randomly, with only high shutter speeds playing back at 30fps. Should have pulled out the DSLR.

Final R3Ds before upgrading to stable firmware added to description.

Thank you Aria for all your efforts. This was really fun, in some way the coolest news of NAB this year. :)

And thank you Jarred and RED for joining the party instead of just deleting everything.

New firmware is causing random camera shutdowns on my Scarlet. Using MMount as well.

So much for stable firmware! Mine did shut down once but it didn't seem too out of the ordinary for my cam. It generally will do that on beta firmware. Usually right after I tap on the touchscreen to do something. In this case I tried setting Auto Exposure mode just to see if it worked (considering using for time-lapse). Got a shutdown so I assumed it was just because of that.
