Why is RED so late releasing EPIC and Scarlet?

1. We had no idea what we were doing.

2. This is as difficult a trick as anyone could possibly pull off. 5K/120fps on a postage stamp has never been done before by anyone, let alone by a new company that has no idea what they were doing and no library of information.

3. Engineers are optimistic. They think they can do stuff faster than is reasonable. And they tell us dates that they can't make.

4. Stuff changes. We have added capabilities along the way the complicated the process. This is a disruption to the program and adds time to process.

5. Nothing works like it is supposed to. The amount of boards and lines of code needed for this project are not comprehensible. Everything needs to be done several times to get it right.

No one is as frustrated as me over the delays. But it is what it is. The process just simply takes more time than anyone would expect.

There are several million lines of code in an EPIC and Scarlet. No excuses... just fact. Everyone is working 24/7 with catnaps. We love the program and the opportunities. But we are guessing at when we will finish.

No company loves what they are doing more than RED. No company works harder. But forgive us if we don't meet deadlines. This is really hard stuff.

Your forgiven. :) These kinds of posts help. We do not get to see behind the RED doors; obviously you guys are very hard at work, but these kinds of posts always help ease the frustration of patience. Thank you Jim for your dedication! Thank you RED for all your hard work!

I have a dream that one day, I will hold Scarlet in my hands....... :)

I just hope we will know at least a month beforehand the time it is released so we can prepare the funds.

Take your time!

+1

The Epic and Scarlet will be here when they are.
The R1 MX is here now, and anyone who need to shoot now, well there are cameras out in the open capable of shooting nice imagery already.

IMHO Magic Motion and low mass are the biggest biggies with the Epic program. I like the HDR, too and 5k and the various framerates. But I CAN wait for the motion. It will be the Epics primary selling point, in my view. We all want that, and my guess is that the initial responses from "the world" are not too far off my own.

Get some sleep. One needs that occationally.

The program looks fantastic.

Thanks for keeping us updated. Your openness and honesty is really appreciated. I understand you are still unable to give us firm dates.

Good Morning Jim! If I may flatter you, I'd say the part of you I admire most is your constant effort to do your best. Not everyone could do what you've done, but you knew you could and so you did. In a world full of cheap products, bad service and poor work ethic, it genuinely feels like you and your team are always trying to perform at your absolute best. Thanks for the example... and the cameras!

I feel bad for our customers and our engineers. Customers have the right to feel disappointed for the delays and our engineers are working so hard to get this done. I set out an impossible task. What we are doing really is impossible, which is exactly the way I want it. But it takes a toll on everyone. Sometimes I don't sleep at night because of what I am putting everyone through... In the end, it will be worth it. In the meantime it is hell for all. Sorry about that.

Jim

Jim,

You have my full love, support and encouragement.

I trusted you in the early days, when people said RED was a scam. My trust has paid itself over thousands of time.

I just got my first DP gig on a major indie feature, and I know I could not have done this in such a short amount of time without owning a Red One, and building my career on your dream.

So, thank you a thousand times over. I will continue waiting for Epic with gratitude in my heart.

The frank and honest update is sincerely appreciated. What you guys are doing is inspiring and I personally can't imagine the time and effort it takes. I sure would like a Scarlet and hope to buy one when they are available. Best of luck to you all at Red.

Just stop adding features and bumping up the price or I'm priced out.
It's now $6000 as the cheapest way to shoot redcode.
The extra grand I had put aside so I don't have to shoot with a tiny screen just disappeared.

J. We are doing the best we can... which also means we can't satisfy everyone.

It will be worth it when it arrives. Everyone else just stop hassling the man.

You're incredibly gracious about it, Jim. I'd have flipped every whinger the bird by now. Maybe if you implemented a penalty system it might change things... ie, he who whinges most gets his camera last? That oughta shake things up a bit.
