  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Late...

forget about living outside of the box Jim, I bet you couldn't even FIND the box if you tried.. You are building a legacy which is a lifelong process : ) I admire humans like you.. Take all the time you need to deliver the stuff that's in your head.

EMMM...Jim, I'm not sure if you have seen the footage coming out of the Red One-MX. If you haven't then rest assured that as at now we are very very impressed and joyously satisfied with what we have. The cameras are stable, the work flow problems are minimal (extensive choices) etc. We are of course part of this Red program for the release of the Epic, but right now please take your time, no pressure whatsoever, we don't even need patience we have the Red-MX.

We await the story telling possibilities of the EPIC, we know you will deliver come rain or shine. We are very patient.

Thanks

+1!

Well said.

I think it's hard to be "late" when you are few years ahead of everyone else.

Double well said.
M-X is here and rocking so...
We can wait a while.
Take your time guys...standing by
Cheers,

I'll jump in on that wagon and add that Red One M-X footage looks like what I thought Epic would look like.

We may not have 120fps, higher RedCode, and all the 007 add-ons yet, but once they do come we'll be getting something else that will make the wait more than worth while.

... In the end, it will be worth it. In the meantime it is hell for all. Sorry about that.

Jim

Looking forward to "the end" like a child to christmas, but still, as long as we get some bones thrown, it's easier to bear.

So please Jannard, keep us posted as good as you can.

The pile of money everyone is sitting on waits to be spent. And I don't wanna invest into anything else than RED cams anymore...

It's easier to wait when you already own an MX sensor ;) wish I could say that.

Having said that, is there a possibility to get a range (like 3-12 months - hehe) on how many months you guys are planning to deliver? or when you guys think the next stage will be about to start?

Your problem, Jim, isn't under-delivering, it's over promising. Let me help you out.

As an engineer, I can honest say you should take any time estimate given to you by an engineer and multiply it by pi.

I don't own either, the wait is much easier for me. Not saying that you are, but I wouldn't even dream about complaining if I had One. :)

I really can't get some of the complaints. The only ones that could understandably get antsy are those who plan/ed business operations around estimated deliveries. But since very early on Red has made it clear that those dates (and anything else) were subject to change, that we should count on it.

Hope those are few and find good compromises for the time being. It has been said a million times, but there are great cameras out on the market right now. M-X's DR might not be film's but it ain't too shabby, and the resolution bar has come and long gone.

Jim, I wanna thank you for being honest about this.

I have now decided to buy a Panasonic AF-100.

It's nice to at least know that the camera is going to take longer to come out.

Count me in for a Scarlet S35.

I CAN SO RELATE TO DELAYS>

Our 28,000 sq/ft facility was also supposed to open last April... but the city of Portland sucks ass and the delays are all related to nit picking and moronic bureaucracy ... you'd think they would be ecstatic to help a company that is creating jobs and tax revenue in this economy.. but thats not how they think!

Then add the fact Im a filmmaker, not a contractor... and I had no idea what I had in store remodeling a 100 year old building... its taking forever!

2 years later, we are down to the final fire inspections... and then building final inspection BUT its been 3 weeks since we applied for a permit to move some sprinkler heads to comply with code. 3 weeks to move 8 sprinkler heads... and then each inspection takes 3 to 5 business days so Im looking at weeks probably
my point is that its, IMPOSSIBLE to predict... because so much is out of my hands. So I for one, SO UNDERSTAND about being LATE.

and there is nothing worse than having to turn down revenue because you are late.
but like RED, im not fully launching my website or business until we are FULLY READY.
and that is hard when people are literally beating our doors down...

A couple of serious questions here Jim.

Do you consider that with each of these delays and price increases that you lose a portion of your potential customer base?

You take the position that you are ahead of the competition and refer to them as slow to act or change. Yet I still don't know if I will ever be able to get my hands on a Scarlet, due to delays and cost increases, but I will shortly be able to get my hands on a panasonic AG AF100 which in all honesty is more than comparable to the Scarlet. Do you think it is time to take a different stance on the competition?

I'm pretty representative of the low cost production market (weddings, events, corporate) and independent film market. HDRx is not going to tempt me towards a higher priced Scarlet 2/3rds. Is there any way that you can release to market a camera that is similar in spec to the one you announced all that time ago for close to the price that you announced at that time?

If not it is a shame as there was a time that I thought of RED being the company that would spark the indie film market back to life. So far that has been Canon, out of the blue really.

Could RED still challenge companies like canon and panasonic in this market or are you moving your sights now?

There doesn't seem to be a camera on your product list that appeals to me anymore and I really want there to be.

Please do not offer me 3K/4K, redcode or HDRx as viable reasons to consider a Scarlet, we both know that the market I am speaking about couldn't care less about that, the price difference and slight increase in visible quality don't seem to justify it, and it sounds like you banging the same drum. If I could get my hands on the original spec scarlet for close to the original price I would jump at it, so basically all I'm asking is, is that a possibility, or have you scraped any plans for that and are now only aiming at a market in a higher price band. If so, I'll buy an AG AF100 and maybe rent an epic when I need it.

It would be nice to hear from you on this as it would clear up a lot of the frustration I and many others feel towards RED.

It has. Almost every indie movie at any festival is shot on red. Very few are shot on Canon.

Out of real curiousity, not trying to be smart...

If you don't care about 3K/4K, don't care about REDCODE, and don't care about HDRx...why are you interested in RED?

There are plenty of 1080p cameras that shoot easily editable video codecs with modest dynamic range on the market right now. And there are no doubt about to be a number of large sensor options as well.

Seems a bit like someone questioning the price of a high performance car when they don't really care about the 0-60 times, don't care about the 60-100 times, and really don't even want to hear about the handling. Those are the very things which create such a price...otherwise, one can be perfectly happy with a Honda.

I don't think Red or Jim cares about making large imager cameras for the under $4K market. I think were gonna need another camera company with an owner like Jim to target the under $4000/$3000 price range market with a APS-C or S35 1080P imager. Red clearly has no plans to compete against Canon(5D/7D) and Nikon(D90/D7000). All the pros that I know that are currently shooting with the 5D and the 7D are not gonna give up the APS-C/FF35 imager for 2/3 imager.

My point about the 3K/4K, redcode and HDRx is that while they are great features, features that I would like, they do not justify the cost increase, especially considering that all but the HDRx were features in the original 3K for 3K Scarlet.

And by pointing me towards the great 1080p cameras out there, you are right, and you are showing my point. Why would I now consider a Scarlet 2/3rds over any of these great 1080p cameras, especially a camera like the AG AF100. 3K was only ever going to be down sampled to 1080p anyway and a clean output from HD SDI to a nanoflash is also a great way to record in a high quality codec.

This is the frustrating thing, we know that 3K down sampled to 1080p would have looked great, redcode is a great codec, and the absolute killer was getting this in a great package "3K for 3K"

What I am asking is, is the market that the original "3K for 3K" scarlet was aimed at now being passed by, or do RED not consider that they are passing them by. If so where is the camera for that market?

I'll make myself more clear. The features are all great, I would love them, but when I say that the market couldn't care less about them I mean when they go to purchase, and they see the cost increase in the camera that they have been waiting excitedly for. A camera that they got excited about because it seemed it was going to be in their price range. Now it is pushed further away, the price is being pushed up, and the features start to lose their sheen a bit. So much so that you look at your money and consider, 'do I really need to down sample 3K for a great image' or 'do I really need redcode when I can record to a nanoflash'

Your car analogy is way off, the Scarlet 2/3rds is far from a super car. Lets put it back in the Honda bracket for now. So the AF100 is a Honda, and the Scarlet 2/3rds is a Honda, but it has a sun roof and a spoiler (a bit of a more realistic analogy) Now consider the Honda with the sunroof and spoiler costs almost twice as much as the other one.

I think this makes me more clear.

Did you see the original spec for Scarlet, and the original price?

I think Jim was pretty much aiming directly towards an under $4K market considering the tag line "3K for 3K"

You are right though, I think they have moved on, but I'd like to hear the questions I asked answered as it really makes no sense to me.
