  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Late...

I feel bad for our customers and our engineers. Customers have the right to feel disappointed for the delays and our engineers are working so hard to get this done. I set out an impossible task. What we are doing really is impossible, which is exactly the way I want it. But it takes a toll on everyone. Sometimes I don't sleep at night because of what I am putting everyone through... In the end, it will be worth it. In the meantime it is hell for all. Sorry about that.

Jim

I work for a 15 year old software company which was very much like RED. I know your developers will look back on this period with pride. In order to do pioneering work, you need everybody to be way better than average. That kind of people need challenges to be happy. Just make sure they get the opportunity to celebrate, travel the world or relax after the mission is accomplished.

I had hoped to get a Scarlet before I retire this fall, but I am perfectly happy to wait until next summer to get the perfected version you will make. I just would like to see some information about the mini primes soon, not to mention tests and pictures!

I figured that given the news coming out this week, we would see some major news this friday. Woot!

It's nice to see Red is in Crunch mode!

Jim, you are best. Keep going. We support you.

Jim, one question about scarlet : have you solved the manufacturing issue ? Since previous manufacture is out, did you find another one to build your camera...?

I guess this was the main issue for scarlets delays, except making it fully functional and bug free (but this stands close to epic own steps so it's ok).

OK Jim, so my first film won't be shot on Epic. My subsequent ones sure as hell will be. Every week you keep holding us up, all other alternatives become less and less significant. Magic Motion™, HDRx, 5k, 120fps, size of a 'Blad, touch focus, SSD... You and the guys are weaving magic here.

I'll be here waiting whenever it happens. Where else am I going to be?

Dear Jim,

I think the most important right now is getting the Epic ready and having a almost bug-free camera system. I know you all are very willing to release a cheaper and more portable sollution on the market, but we as professionals can't wait to have a superb camera that has been in development for some time now. If it takes more time, then so be it. But if I were you , I would'nt care to much about Scarlet and the fixed lens right now. I hate to say it, but I've always been on a certain budget like anyone else, and i'm still quiet young, but we can't expect everything for almost free,
and to satisfy the most of us will be when Epic will be finally here and working.
then the pricetag is second important. Delivering a system that no one has done before should stay your primary concern, but I think you're all aware of this. Me myself I'm even a little scared that a 6000$ system could be a threat to the Epic for rental market and the market itself. I've never seen to much benefit in making it so available ....$15000 is something else...Then there's already a gap between prosumer and professional, that's the way I see it...

I'd love to see Epic asap off course. Good luck and try to get some sleep as well...

I just hope we will know at least a month beforehand the time it is released so we can prepare the funds.

That's the contract you signed when you left a deposit, RED will give you 30 days notice prior to your stage two delivery.

So you can safely plan for 30 days.

David

The truth of the matter is this.. EPIC will be released...... some time next year.. or when ever?

Then once it is released we (minus the chosen few) will all wait another 6 to 12 months or more for our orders to be fore-filled due to typical back order delays and lack of EPICS made in the first place.

Only the gifted (big boys) and Jim's mates will get there's first batch, then the rest of us that have had deposits put in months and months ago will be fed ours well into next year or the year after that... Same as RED ONE.

Sooo.. I suggest everyone just chill out and stay in love with your RED1 MX for another year or so. Because holding the beautiful new EPIC in your hands is going to be a long long way a way...

Don't worry Jim, we will all still be there at the end, money in hand.

I'd love to be proven wrong... Please prove me wrong Jim, Pleeeeeeeaaaaase... :)

Hi Jim, if you can't answer this I would completely understand as you probably wouldn't want to post more target dates, however, I am just dying to know if the epic could possibly still ship by end of this year? Or does your post suggest that we should start thinking 2011 due to the epic scope of this project?

Honestly, as one of those who put down a deposit on Stage 2, I was getting a little frustrated that Stage 2 has not shipped yet. But after seeing the HDRx Footage, and knowing what you are setting out to do, I'm glad you are taking the time to get it right. Keep up the good work, and keep pushing the limits. :)

Yes, I still want my camera now - but seeing what you are doing makes me more then happy to wait. :)

I kind of wish more people would take your approach and have the drive and passion to reinvent things and create a new blueprint for others to follow or else to inspire others to think different. Although I may never own a RED cam(I still use a dvx100a) I thoroughly enjoy coming here daily to check out what new things are being created and am inspired by your ideas and ways of working. When paving a new road you have no way of seeing what twists and turns you'll have to make, half the fun is watching you guys lay it down, just know we'll have fun driving on it:) Just letting us in on the developement I consider a privelage, thanks RED!:hurray:

1. We had no idea what we were doing.

2. This is as difficult a trick as anyone could possibly pull off. 5K/120fps on a postage stamp has never been done before by anyone, let alone by a new company that has no idea what they were doing and no library of information.

I think your engineers and developers deserve a little more credit!

I'd love to know what your new date estimates are. I fell like you've got enough info under your belt to be semi-accurate, but I feel like it will leave a lot of people disappointed in how long the wait might be.
