Hi,

I am new to using RedCine-X so some advice would be greatly appreciated. I have been given an R3D file from a friend as she would like it stabilised. I wanted to convert it from an R3D to an uncompressed QT.

This was all fine, however when the export was complete the QT turned out to be bigger (2.4gb) than the initial 1.8gb R3D file. Can someone please help?

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Are you rendering to 1080 or 4K?

If it is 4K then your file size will definitely be much larger in an uncompressed QT. From that file size it appears you are doing 2K or 1920X1080 - in which case I'd also expect an uncompressed QT to come out larger than the original R3D file size (but obviously not as large as 4K). Even 1080 prores only comes out at slightly smaller file sizes than the original media.

Long story short is uncompressed QT will yeild very large file sizes - it's unavoidable.

Hope that helps.

It's a matter of math, really. If you transcode into something less compressed (or with worse algorithms) then your file will be larger.

It's because RAW doesn't contain RGB data for every pixel, it just contains luminance values for each photosite. When you convert it to video, it then contains R, G, and B values for each pixel rendered, which with formats like uncompressed, can make the file size much bigger.

Does anyone not think it amazing that we can put 4k RAW into the same sort of data rate we used to use for uncompressed 4:2:2 SD video, and yet the image is oh-so-superior from the REDCODE Raw compression? I think that's pretty good :-)

Having been around this stuff for 15 years Graeme and I'd go further and say it's f##king remarkable!

And REDRay even more so - beautiful quality distribution of 4k in less space than DV, barely above SD DVD.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Graeme and his knowledge of compression is the reason I went RED, some three years ago...

Just cherrish the moment and be glad you don't need a CODEX to record the thing in the first place...
