We recently completed a very big project for Duke Medicine here in North Carolina. I thought I'd post it as an example of what RED can do in the "corporate" type of environment. This may show some good samples of some things frequently discussed:

-The project is 17 min long. We transcoded every bit of footage to ProRez and edited in Final Cut Pro. We only had a couple clips where we had to go back to the R3D to color correct. The rest of the cc was done in FCP.
-We had a shooter travel to Cape Cod for the opening & closing scenes. Not a terrible experience to travel with the camera in a limited fashion...basic lens, not many filters, etc. Very do-able in a limited capacity. (You can see we could have used some grad ND's, but still looks great for a 1-day, travel shoot by a single crew person.)
-We shot the white screen interviews all Tungsten lighting with 2 RED's. Manual sync in post as locking cameras gave us issues during testing.
-We handheld quite a bit on some segments with the ET Mantis. Great, great rig. To do handheld with the RED, you should have one of these. Some shots were very "run & gun" and that is what the client wanted...doc style movements, in the moment, real.
-In the "Just for Us" section...we had only available lighting in a pretty dark room. Still got a great image out of it.
-We used the Cinesaddle for the in-car shots. Again, if you don't have one, buy one. Very cheap for what it allows you to do.
-During the baby segment, especially, that I had to ask my editor if they were stills from a 35mm camera or footage from the RED. (RED!)

Overall, the RED performed brilliantly on this shoot and the RED tools worked great for us in post, too. RED brings such a high-end, filmic feel to this type of work, that people should not dismiss it. It does take more work to lug and build this camera in the field, but we think it's well worth it. This camera CAN be used for day to day work and not just cinematic stuff.

To view, go here and be sure to choose "HQ" mode. It's the one on the front page called "Transforming Medicine."

Thoughts? And thanks...

By the way, I will add this...

Since this was being shown at a large function via projector, Duke was smart enough to show it in High Def. After having issues with getting it to our Lacie Bluray burner, we went for Plan B late in the game: AppleTV. We gave the client the AppleTV and a remote...they hooked up and showed it on a 10-12ft screen and it looked fantastic.

If you haven't discovered the beauty that is AppleTV...you should. Not perfect HD, but a LOT better than giving someone an SD DVD.

Kevin, next time give me a call if you're shooting up this way. I'm a stone's throw from the Cape.

I agree with you, the camera can be very effective for corporate work. I've been using it in that capacity for some shoots recently. Clients love it. I'll be shooting in North Carolina in a couple of weeks. Not on RED though.

Cool...thanks. We're in Raleigh. Let us know if you need a hand.

Thanks.

Kevin,

Very well done, with a nice, warm personal feel.

Very, very well done. I loved your interview setups. And beautiful lighting in the hospital. Good job and a great example of the versatility of the RED. Thanks for sharing.
