I have my main work station, and I am very happy with it. But I commute a lot, and I am looking for a good laptop that can handle working with R3D files. I currently have a HP Spectre 13 and it struggles very badly. So I was just wondering if there is a decent laptop that is both portable and can handle editing R3D files.

I use the Adobe CC Suite if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance,

George

Maxed out MacBook pro works really great

I have a maxed out MSI gaming laptop and it chews red files, not a problem. It's big and kinda heavy but works with no issues. Even for Resolve.

You are probably looking for a Dell XPS 15. Go for the config with Core i7, GTX 960M, 84 Wh battery and 16 GB RAM. There's a 4K option, but for this size FHD is decent, and the battery life is much better than the 4K version.

Another option is Asus Zenbook Pro, which looks pretty stunning too. It has pretty much the same specs, and much cheaper than the XPS, but not as portable (but then nothing is). The third option is Macbook Pro 15 (the config with discrete GPU), which is a similar form factor to the Zenbook Pro, but it's going to be slower than the XPS and Zenbook till they update it.

There are much faster laptops than these on the market, but they are larger and heavier.

I've had a Mac before, and I wasn't overly impressed. I've got my main PC and I'd like to stick to windows, purely for the easy of integration, with external hard drives (again, I made this mistake and re-formatted an external drive in mac, so my PC can only read not write.

I'll have a look into the Windows options. I like the sound of the XPS.

Thanks for all your suggestions,

George

I've been wondering the same thing and there are three very important factors for me:
- max. 14" and not too thick (otherwise it becomes to large for the light setup that I prefer)
- built in GPU (960m or better)
- good display where I can work on when I'm not at home

My current favorite is the Razer Blade (2016): i7-6700HQ, 970m (with 6G DDR5) and 16GB DDR4 and 14" IGZO 3200x1800 Panel and a very well built Aluminum Body.

Agreed, I currently have a 13" Ultrabook, and I find that the size of it is just perfect! I don't really want anything bigger because it will ruin the portability of it. My friend has a Lenovo with a 17" screen, it is really bulky and takes up half his backpack, while for me I want something that is small and light enough to fit in my bag without knowing its there, if you know what I mean?

My requirements are really that it is fast. Has at least a 250gb SSD and has USB 3.0 or USB C

FWIW I recently bought an Asus gaming laptop GL552VW ($1249 at BHPhoto, there is a cheaper lower spec option). 6700HQ, 16GB Ram, 128SSD and 1TB hard drive GTX960M graphics with 4GB video Ram. I didn't buy primarily for R3d editing, but RedCine -X runs nicely on it. (I do not have Adobe or Resolve). One of the reasons I picked it is the display, IPS 1080p and matte rather than glossy, I really like it. Also this laptop has a USB 3.1 port for future faster external HD connection
