  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Laptop Or Tower?

Try run 3ds max with virtual dub. There is no point, just install XP on your Mac (now that Apple is intel inside).

About software not on OSX, well the list is so long, but just to name a few:

Discreet Flame, Smoke, Flint, Inferno, Lustre, 3ds max, ...
Color garading tools such as Scratch, Baselight, ...
Digital Fusion,
Not to talk about the countless little software that exist out there and can be very usefull.

It is not PC and Mac, but windows and OSX, and BTW Apple is making pc now that it is intel inside, a Mac Intel.

But I would love that Apple stop trying to sell their hardware at any cost, and develop FCS on XP.

ok, the wifey just got 900 bucks from her parents (score!) and i need to choose a laptop for her. i'm thinking backup for the tower i'm going to buy myself for my Red--then we'll be mobile. suggestions??

Is it possible to edit Red footage on a $900 laptop?

i'm a mac guy.

heres to ressurecting this thread. hope someone sees it in the workflow section and responds. i'm gonna go check ebay.

I have seen quite a lot of people happy with their Toshiba, they are quite good bang for your buck.

For editing RED footage on a laptop, they have done it on Crossing the Line with a Mac Book Pro from that time, you should be ok with any Intel DualCore and a nice hard disc drive. You may want to have eSATA connection or FW800 (but that's quite rare on PCs, and especially on laptop)

The question really is how much speed do you want/need? Most people, I believe, will be editing at 1080 or 720. On my 2004 dual 1.8GHz, 2GB ram, I have had no problem with ProRes 422 footage. It plays smoothly and is wonderful to work with. But, for the RED I am going to buy a new MacPro. However, unless the 8 core comes down dramatically, I will only be buying the 4 core. Heck, for the $1799 more it is for 4 more processors , I could spend a few more $$$'s and get another MacPro and then just switch between computers on projects. To me, that would be money wiser spent.

ok, she gets a macbook pro for around 1700 with the student discount.

macville, what do you think the specs will be for a hi-end mac pro by january? anyone else?

Why not wait until Red ships and the 3rd party software gets into gear. If there are a bunch of apps made for Win/Linux, go the PC route. If Mac has what you want, go that route. As long as you're buying new, the machine performance is less relevant than the software interface.

FWIW, I'm going the Win/Linux route because that's the platform I develop in.
