Got a 12T Thunderbolt Raid . . . just need a TB Mac Tower to go with!!!

Won't come, I'm afraid.

If we're speculating, what about NAB? New nvidia cards and i7s come out in April, NAB is in April, Mac Pro is due for a revision. Seems like perfect timing to me.

Do you have insider info on that or are you speculating?

Overheard the salesmen at Melrose Mac today saying that deliveries on MacPros are now pushed back from 1 week to 3 weeks, which, they said, is usually indicative of either a refresh, or a discontinuation, of the product line.

+1

But the future doesn't look too bright for these TB Mac Towers. I'm willing to wait a few months, you never know.

Slow deliveries of the Mac Pro have to do with Intel chip shortages at the moment. *ALL* workstation vendors are seeing this right now, not just Apple. But the Guy at Melrose Mac is on the right track -- Intel is about to unleash the new Sandy Bridge iteration of the Xeon CPUs, so even with the shortage, most integrators are also shorting product themselves because the new stuff is expected to ship from Intel within the next month.

As for the future of the Mac Pro, it's definitely not being discontinued. There are too many new instances of hardware hooks and support popping up in OSX developer betas. However, I do think the days of the large tower Mac are over -- and they should be. The design is nearly 8 years old now (Power Mac G5 introduction up to now).

I'm expecting the next iteration of Mac Pro to be slimmer, sleeker, rack-mountable, focus on using 2.5" internal storage devices... Don't expect it to have more than the current 4 PCIe slots. We're seeing this trend in PC land as well... And I don't expect Apple to use multiple chipsets in cascade fashion as many PC monster server and workstation boards do in order to get more slots (at the expense of higher latency).

Hoping and preying that you are right... Bring on the rack mount MacPro, 4-6U would be sweet.

Once again, love your insightful comments :)

4 slots of pci-e 3.0 though :)

with a gen 3 pci expander, and a bit of thunderbolt. we are talking a shit ton of bandwidth here. I'm excited. I'm not getting my cyclone right now because I know gen 3 is right around the corner. and even tough I have a lot of 2.0 cards, future proofing and having that extra overhead never hurt anybody...

The MacPro shipping delays are due to hard drive constraints. Go to Apple.com and configure a MacPro yourself. Even the highest end 12 core, while stands at 1-3 weeks for standard configuration, changes to 3-4 days if you change the hard drive capacity.
