LaCie Little Big Disk Buspowered RAID0 drive with 1TB Capacity

Agree with ATF. I have 3 x Le CIE BIGDISK 1TB's (2 x 500GB's). These are disgraceful!

All have some issue. I have lost two of them over time through failing power supplies. THis is not obvious at first however when you initiate data recovery utilities such as DATA RESCUE II.app and TTP.app (on OSX), these drive get worse and worse.

I lost 640GB 3 weeks ago from the last one and it had a replacement power supply. Some 60GB P2 footage I will never get back!

Le Cie's support is simply dreadful here in ASIA.

My colleague bought a 500GB Le CIE which was dead on arrival. Sadly we had discarded the packaging after a day before we realised we needed it for an exchange. 2 months to get an exchange. - simply disgraceful.

I have since relegated all 3 external drives t the shelf and have implemented a QUANTUM HH desktop SAS Ultrium LTO4 tape drive.

So to chime in here with my thoughts, we've used a LaCie 320GB Little Big Disk for the last six months as an on set backup tool to complement the RedDrive's data BEFORE heading home for the night. It's worked flawlessly at that task.

Thing is, as people have noted, it's RAID 0, so DO NOT use this as THE backup device of choice. Goes without saying really.

But it's fast, it works in the field without needing separate power (using FW800) and gives you a large capacity in a small form factor.

Once back at the studio or post house do another backup (if not before) to a non-RAID hard drive, tape, or whatever other format you trust not to lose your data.

For that functionality the LaCie Little Big Disk is more than good enough, and we never delete what's on our RedDrive until we've verified that the LaCie and other backup copies are good anyway.

Backup, backup, backup. It's data, so treat it as such. Don't blame a RAID 0 device for losing your backup if it's your only backup!

For what we use it for, The LaCie Little Big Disk gets the thumbs up from me.
