Hey guys!

I'll be visiting LA from May 8-15th. First time! What should I do? Food suggestions, anything to see, vintage camera stores?!

Too funny, my girlfriend and I are going the same dates and I was almost gonna ask the same! haha

We are checking out LA and Northern California for a possible move and looking for suggestions as well :)

Lodge Bread near Venice is my new favorite thing in the world. Everything there is amazing. Mumford Brewery just opened up between Little Tokyo and Skid Row. That and Beachwood are the best LA breweries, IMO.

Hollywood is worth seeing to have seen it (and the Arclight and Chinese are legitimately cool; the Chinese IMAX screen is AMAZING) but it's a tourist trap mostly unless you're into the club scene, which gets pretty crazy, particularly after 2am. Venice is nice. Point Dume and El Matador and the SaMo pier are nice. Probably too late to see the wildflower blooms and they're a distance but that's cool. The Getty is cool. Sunset Strip and the same area but near Wilshire and Rodeo Drive are worth seeing for the history associated with them and if you want to see a Bugatti. WeHo is nice if that's your scene, the Abbey is about the most iconic gay bar there is and it's a really nice part of town. Observatory is nice on the east side, as is downtown... it's the new cool thing. East side is for hipsters but great food there and a lot of downtown is REALLY nice now, too, with slightly more expensive restaurants though.

As for camera stores? Samy's is the big camera store near the Grove but I haven't found anything that really fits that bill. :/ Freestyle near Jitlada in little Armenia is the best place to buy large and medium format film.

Mostly just In N Out Burger is what's good.... The location near the airport is the best restaurant in LA. Failing that, the Mexican, Thai, Armenian, and Korean are good. Everything from Jon and Vinny's line of restaurants should be great. Mozza or Angelini for Italian. The view off Mulholland is great if you can find parking at night. Tsujita is the best ramen in the city (two locations in Sawtelle, one in Glendale). Tokyo style, get the dipping ramen. The pizza everywhere is awful, not a good slice in the city, and they put eggs on it for some reason or something. smh Republique has the best pastry and a good brunch. Sqirl for hipster brunch. Jitlada is good if you want to be hospitalized after eating food that's too spicy. Guisados is okay for fancy tacos. Tortilleria La Azteca is my favorite burrito in town but it's a bit in the middle of nowhere and there are plenty of other places that are almost as good. Chengdu Taste or anywhere in Alhambra is great for Chinese. LA proper has poor Chinese food compared with the San Gabriel Valley. Not sure what's best currently for Korean BBQ but that's great, too. People like Sugar Fish for affordable high quality sushi. The similarly named Sweet Fin is my favorite poke place but there is a lot of good poke, particularly in Little Tokyo...

Kogi is good high/drunk food, as is Chego. Gus's has the best hot chicken in the city but the best chicken sandwich is at Howlin' Rays.

Visit RED Studios as well.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. For sure going to hit Republique and Red. Are any of the studio tours worth going to?

The Universal Studio tour VIP Experience is good but long! Consider this a day trip. You ride in a single car tram as opposed to the five car trains that roam the lots. Plus you get to walk into, and around, several sets, back lots, and studios along the way. You also get lunch and priority access to rides and shows afterwards.

Thanks Todd.

Also, do I visit Red Studios, Red HQ, or Red Store Hollywood?

The Red Store Hollywood and Red Studios are the same location; The Store is open to the public, however to get into Red Studios proper, you need to be invited in.

Red HQ is a one hour drive (or more, depending on traffic) south to Irvine. Not sure what the visiting protocol is there....

I'm actually staying in irvine half of the trip! I probably won't stop by there uninvited though!

If your in specifically Irvine, Food wise, there are stellar asian restaurants. Jamboree rd @ Alton there is a foodie area, cant miss it there, great noodle soups, dumplings etc. (if thats your thing)
Mexican food is the staple of south Orange county, ask around.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Did a TON yesterday. Hitting Rebulique, LACMA, and Red today!
