Hey Guys,

A great group of film students are prepping for thesis and are looking for a decent set of lenses. We want a gritty, not so sterile look, so I'm thinking a set of lomos would be a good choice, but we definitely are open for suggestions! :) We don't have much money left, so we're hoping someone on the forum could cut us a great deal, or maybe we'll get really lucky and someone with a set of primes will come along and donate to our cause. We're an all student crew (non paid or for profit) trying to make something great with what little we can come up with. If anyone could lend us a hand or point us in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated, we are shooting RED (MX) and the community here has always been a great group of very proud, very knowledgable professionals. Thanks guys and keep pushing things forward!!!

Call up the various rental houses around town -- Panavision, Birns & Sawyer, Claremont, Otto Nemenz, etc. -- and ask them for a student rate. They might be able to make you a very low, low deal if it was a weekend deal or something.

It's hard to "borrow" lenses because of the potential for loss, breakage, or theft. The insurance kills you on this stuff.

BTW, there have been thousands and thousands of movies out there shot on just two lenses. I know of a few movies shot on one lens, some extremely big, successful productions. The Last Picture Show is one of them.

Thanks Marc! Everything you said was incredibly insightful, and makes so much sense. I never even considered shooting on just one or two lenses. Big help, thanks again.

For a one-lens shoot, consider gettiung an older zoom, like an Angie 25-250. I bet you can get one for free or quite cheap from a rental house.

Here is a link to some footage shot on a RED One: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthr...eux-Night-Test

Here are some links to some footage shot on Schneider Cine-Xenons primes:

The Angie and the Schneiders may get you the look you want. Both are older and should be a bargain.

Yeah, those Lomos got a crappy, low-end look to them. Especially any OCT19 mount ones. Anyone got a set they'd like for me to take off their hands for cheap? : = )

Seriously, if you want gritty, I'd go with some contrasty Zeiss superspeeds and not use any filtration.

And I am serious about finding some Lomos myself.

Best to all,
lael

Hmm...I thought I'd find a fellow comrade in you. Nice glass you got, Michael, very nice. I'll definitely stop by if I find myself in DC.

No, I'll keep my doorstops for now. :)

All the best,
lael
