Good day . I is my first time when i need to L&T all my footage to ProRes for client. Footage is about 6 Hours , and looks like L&T take sow many time .
When L&T to RedCode it takes about 7 hours and now to ProRes HQ it takes abou 50 Hourse to transfer all footage . Is it normal ? 2 Day FC is working on it , and still there is about 100 clips to be loaded .
Any ideas , or may be it is ok with ProRes.
Thanks.

Log and Transfer takes really long time.

Hey Vigen,

L&T to Redcode is essentially just re-wrapping the R3D into a quicktime file and doing a "copy" of that file into the capture scratch- there is no "transcoding" in the traditional sense of the word. That's why it only takes about the time that it would to copy a file from one place to another. This file is great for "online" and sending to Color for Raw controls (via the Red room in color) but won't playback as quickly as one would expect an offline file to.

As you know, the L&T to ProRes is transcoding the file to another format- which is much more conducive to offline work but not great if you're pressed for time. If you're plan is to offline then online- I would suggest using red rushes with a 1/4 debayer setting to 720p ProRes and burn-in as your offline format (if you need HD) then match back to your R3Ds using a conform tool such as Clipfinder.

If you're trying to avoid the conform process and would like to go with an offline-online cut- then try 2K High debayer to a 1080p or 2K ProRes HQ file in RedRushes and run with that for editorial, pix lock, and Color Correction.

Hope this helps

Cheers-

Greatly dependent on the system specs and version of FCP. On FCP 7 on my quadcore I get around 2:1 to 3:1 for ProRes L&T. So 6 hours of footage would take 12-18 hours. That's a lot of footage so it's not too surprising. But that said, there are many alternatives- cutting proxies, L&T to Native which is much faster, or process to ProRes in REDrushes, which is a lot faster because it uses multiple cores to render.

What are you trying to do? There is most likely a better way of doing it.

RANT....
L&T SUCKS! Don't use it. FCP does NOT support Red native!
end RANT...

If you are in a rush, edit the Quicktime proxies. If you are looking for a good offline file, use Clipfinder to do a one light color and batch render to

Quicktime
1/4 rez debayer
Prorez SQ
1920x1080

I can render about 6fps on my old quad 2Ghz Mac Pro with these settings.

720 will work just fine and be faster, but my HD monitor doesn't support 720p24 so I use 1080p24 at quarter rez and it looks great for offline.

If you are looking for a finish quality file out of this render, do better color correction in Clipfinder and use better quality settings, but you'll get back to your 50 hour render.

There are a lot of ways to do this.

Yes i was thinking to render out footage . But i need to provide offline footage to client for edit , and then CC edit version in my studio.
My idea was to L&T transfer Prores for Editing , then after edit , just bring project , and replace files to RedCode files , and send it to Color .
I don not want to provide R3D files to client .

I seem to be in the minority, but proxy files for offline is the way to go. Zero ingest time, use Monkey Extract or Crimson to re-link to Redcine for RAW file one-light transcodes. Simple really. L&T is a horrible workflow, especially for that much footage.

I am downloading FC 7 now , sow will check tommorow with new FC. At this moment my system is 8 Core with 16Gb Ram . Footage is on Raid storage . FC is 6.0.5

Ahem- I think you meant you are running out to the Apple store to purchase a legitimate copy and not pirate software, right? Because that was my next suggestion, don't depend on pirated software for your professional work nor expect tech support for it.... :sarcasm:

Yes it is my workflow for last year . But for this project i don not want to provide R3D files to client . Sow i need to creat offline files for client.

I would use Clipfinder to create create Prorez files for editor. If the editor will use 480p24 files for the offline that would be fastest, but 720p or 1080p is what most want for Red offline. Quarter rez debayer for offline is more than enough even at 1080p.

Clipfinder to reconnect your offline edit to the _H proxies and send that to Color for final color correction. Works great.

FCS3 on my '09 Mac Pro works pretty good. L&T RED Native works really good. So does L&T into ProRes 4444, but it takes some time to do the transcode to ProRes -- which should be really nice with the next update as I hope we'll get RED Rocket support.

Adobe CS4 still performs much faster in the edit when working with RED native footage, but it has some issues too.

Neither FCS3 or Adobe CS4 currently support the new Color Science. I was kinda disappointed to find this with the new FCS3 support.

Performance is entirely dependent on your system. L&T to RED Native on my Macbook Pro is all but unusable, the system is just too slow. If I want to cut in FCP, I have to do offline and cut with the RED proxies or with ProRes proxies I generate out of RedRushes / Clipfinder, etc..

OTOH, I can cut with the R3D files on that old Macbook Pro in Adobe CS4 and have cut two short films a couple corporate pieces and a commercial that way... Still not ideal, but it's functional.

So your client is the editor? Everyone is an editor these days. :willy_nilly:

I think Redcine might be your easiest workflow, just load up your .R3D files and generate your transcodes from there. Plus its free. :thumbup1:
