When I got RED 1028 I immediately wanted to get out and film...SOMETHING. I'm a huge fan of fight scenes and one of my close friends and collaborators is an outstanding fight choreographer, so I thought it'd be good to cut our teeth with the new toy on one of those.

After shooting the film and running through the post workflow (Crimson FTW!) we decided that we really liked the project, and so we finished it through with sound, music, and color grading. It was only in post that we decided to emulate 70s kung fu flicks, which means the shooting style is more modern than it ought to be (and nary a zoom to be found!), but we're proud of it and thought we'd share it with the RED community.

So without further ado (click the title for the link): Kung Fu Red

Hahaha! I love the ending and the feeling of the whole thing! Very classic in a way! Great simple and efficient shots.

Changing the blue outfit took an evening's work. When we decided to put it out we were tossing around titles and kept coming back to Kung Fu Red. It didn't make sense with the footage as-is (unless you knew the shooting format), since it's all blues and greens, but making her outfit a saturated red and putting everything in warm tones made the title work.

Isolating her outfit was a relatively simple key on the blue. The only challenge was that in a few shots the sky wasn't overcast -- and it was the same color as her outfit! So I had to mask her out if she happened to cross the sky, which fortunately she did in very few shots.

Although of course, had I realized at the time of shooting that we'd want to do that, I would have just asked her to wear red in the first place. :)

Hey I know that guy! I worked with him on a short.

Pretty cool action you've got scripted, I would expect no less from you guys. :B

Thanks for sharing.

Last year, October I think it was. He was in an action short and the lead was a small asian gal. Title's totally slipped my mind, but we shot RED and I was first AC.

Great stuff, Mike.

Here's some pictures I took while we were shooting:

Also, Mike, were you planning on posting the greenscreen test?
