I heard the Red codec for my kona 3 was supposed to be out by "late May"
I was just on the Aja web site and didn't see any downloads, and it is now
Really late May (june 2) Anybody know were I could find the download, or
if it is out, or when it will be out?

thanks

There is no RED codec support for the Kona3, or any other third-party product. Hopefully something like this will come about after RED releases their SDK and third-party vendors incorporate support for RED and R3D files into their tools.

AJA did announce that their next Kona software update would have support for more frame sizes, some of them specifically tailored for the RED One.

So, the Kona guy at NAB was blowing smoke??? He showed me the Kona control panel with the several red options and said you will be able to edit 2k red, real time with this free download update in late may.

I spoke with an AJA rep at an event in NYC about a two weeks ago in regards to this. He told me that they were almost done with beta testing on the new drivers and it should be out very soon, he said "within a few weeks". He stated that they have changed a lot of things with how the card processes info and in true AJA form they want to make sure that there are absolutely no bugs at all when they release it to their users.

I heard and saw in multiple places that they hoped for the Kona version 6 update with RED support to ship late may or early June... we're still in early june but only for a little while longer. But none of these things ever ship on time right? RED is a prime example of that ; )

Call it what you will guys, but this still isn't direct REDCODE support from AJA. It's format output options with various frame sizes and matting support, it still is dependent on playback from the proxies -- that's what I saw at NAB, proxies via FCP. It's a step in the right direction, it's not direct REDCODE support or any sort of acceleration for processing R3D data. ...I wish it was.

Their press release starts out with "In an effort to optimize support for RED Digital Cinema workflows in post production, AJA Video is adding RED-specific video outputs for some of the unique frame sizes that the REDALERT and REDCINE software applications can produce."

It's just frame sizes. I read the press release at NAB and asked one of the reps at their booth if this means we'll get Kona output from inside REDCINE and they didn't know, up to RED as they develop REDCINE, etc... I remain hopeful that we will soon.

Correct Jeff. Nothing gets to use the R3D files directly except RedCine and RedAlert. The AJA Kona update will also allow of playback from files transcoded to other codecs at the RED frame sizes. Not just the proxies.

I doubt we'll see output from RC although I have to say I find it very troubling to do any onelight color corrections in RC without the ability to see your image on a properly calibrated display. Not to mention we have no color management in RC so if you are working in REDLOG but want to view in Rec709 for correction, good luck.

FCP Log and Transfer is still the same proxy system, just a different way of ingesting the footage and letting FCP with the L&T plug-in create it's own proxy pointer files so you don't have to use the camera generated ones.

And like Emery said, it's a pain for grading in RC without output to a proper grading monitor. If RED could work AJA output support into RC, then that would solve a lot of issues for me here (and for just about everyone else too). It's the #1 feature on my list of what RC needs... That and better multithreading so it stops spinning its wheels in the mud on 8-core machines.

Lets hope a new 4K Kona is on the cards soon. I think the Kona is prob due for an upgrade !

This is what I'm hoping for! I'd take two of 'em. If I'm not mistaken, Ted (RedTed) was formerly employed at AJA and I'm hoping that the two companies are indeed working together on some level.

If I could output from the card at 2K+ to a high-quality plasma or DLP for grading and get accelerated processing and conforms from 4K R3D files, I'd pee myself in happiness.
