  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO Link Adapter, any reviews/use?

I have no problems with my Hydrogen in this matter. I have no sim and I can tether no problem. Have you updated your Hydrogen?

Thank goodness. Only one of my Hydrogens has a sim card, and I have two Komodos coming...

(And because the Hydrogen is a dead-end cellphone, I'm going to be moving that sim card to a supported phone RSN.)

Maybe the support team for Hydrogen can answer why tethering doesn't work for some.

But I also want it to actually be smooth, not stuttering like it is now. If I'm in a place with little to no interference in ad-hoc mode, I get the same performance over wireless as I do through the link, minus the improved latency. So the same kind of stutters.
Beginning to feel like this has to do with the app instead, or how Komodo sends the video. Hopefully Red reads this feedback and looks into it, because it's quite annoying since the Link is a bit expensive for what it's doing.

My link arrived today. I have tried it with 2 hydrogens and another Android phone. The usb tether option remains grayed out on all phones when I plug any of them in. Also tried out 5 usb cables. I am using a stormtrooper with firmware 1.3.1. Any thoughts? I like the idea of it, but I am most likely going to return it now.

What version of Android are you running?

Latest, or at least it says the latest when checking updates.

So, if you have the latest, you plug in the USB-C cable between the camera and the Hydrogen, then check tethering and it's greyed out?

Mine is grayed out. Latest updates on hydrogen and Komodo. Tried 2 red usb cables, an Angelbird, a Samsung, and an Apple. Even tried an Android nexus with no luck. The Wireless way all of them work fine. Thinking I have a defective link.

Komodo Link: I can't seem to find this info online. If its been posted somewhere I's appreciate a link. What are the instructions for tethering the Komodo Link adapter and an IOS device? I understand that I need a SIM card and IOS 14 is not working at the moment but I can't get the camera to show up while being hardwired. I must be missing something easy.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I doubt it will work just like that. I don't own the Revolva but I can confirm that the Link Adapter sticks out to the front for at least 8mm and this protrusion with the mounting holes or 1/4"-20 threads begins to protrude at just about 5mm above Komodo's top. Solution: Cut off the protrusion and use longer screws to mount the Link (and maybe a NATO rail?). Be careful when cutting off this thing (just take away as much as necessary) since the Link Adapter has thin walls (max. 1mm) and is a very compact build.

Thank you! I did also contact kippertie before seeing this. They haven't tested w/ a link adapter but said they're pretty sure it woudln't fit.

Asked in the DJI RS2 thread as well, but wouldn't the Komodo Link be perfect to connect to the RS2 as well? Would hope that Red checked that out since its literally USB-C to USB-C.

So I can't find anyway to turn on USB tethering on my original Hydrogen without it having a data plan. It's an AT&T phone, and for whatever reason it is disabled. I purchased a Verizon Hydrogen on eBay and I'm able to USB tether to it without any issues.

I had to send my Komodo back for repair. I am guessing somehow whatever the issue with my Komodo overheating was tied to the link not working. I just got my Komodo ST back today and now the link works perfect.

Hi guys, I have the Komodo (firmware 1.4.0) + iPhone 12 Pro Max (iOS 14.2.1) + RED CONTROL app v1.4.3 and I cannot make the Komodo Link work.
"Fixed USB tethering with iOS 14" is listed on the firmware 1.4.0 notes. I have tried 2 different cables.
Any help with this situation? Thanks!

Robert,

I also had some challenges connecting my iPhone (in my case it was V.13.6) to my link adapter but John at support offered these steps which worked brilliantly and had the added benefit of confirming that my link adapter was functioning correctly. The key here is that you will at first connect in via the browser using the phone IP. Once you can see the web UI, you can then activate Red Control and use it normally,

Connect mobile device to the KOMODO Link Adapter via iPhone USB cable.
On iPhone device, go to "Personal Hotspot" in the device's settings menu, and Enable "Allow Others to Join".
Verify "Trust This Computer? Your settings and data will be accessible from this computer when connected wirelessly or using a cable." message.
Select "Trust".
Verify "Device passcode to Trust This computer".
Enter passcode.
Go to Menu > Communication > KOMODO Link Adapter.
Verify a valid IP Address is supplied.
On the device, open a web browser, and input the IP address supplied in KOMODO Link Adapter menu.
Verify that the web UI is displayed in the browser.
Please note that you'll need to enable live streaming under MENU > MONITORING > LIVE STREAM to allow for streaming.
Try RED Control again.

Rather than connecting via RED Control, this will set up a browser based user interface that will help us test the connection. The browser UI will offer one control method, but please let me know if this procedure allows you to use RED Control as expected.

Hi David,

Thanks for the steps, I have managed to connect the cable and "Trust this computer" and turn on "Personal Hotspot + Allow Others to Join". Opened Safari (on iPhone) with the provided IP and web UI was working fine, after the steps, RED CONTROL app + Link (cabled) is working now.

Now I have one more question: Do I need to "Trust this computer" type password and turn on "Personal Hotspot + Allow Others to Join" every time that I decide to use the Komodo Link?

Because if this is the only way, I'm better with the wireless or external display :(

I heard back today from Dragonframe that they do not currently support the Red Komodo. Seems to me it should be possible using Link, whether directly through USB or Ethernet adapter. Has anyone with a Link tried this out yet? Dragonframe has a free trial version you can use to test. I'd love to hear if it works.

I’m curious if a 2.5Gbps usb nic would work since they are relatively cheap these days. Seems like it would make getting a live video stream way easier. Once I get my Komodo I was planning to order a link just to test. I’m more interested in the networking features than the phone connection.

Does the link allow for (1) image magnification on Hydrogen phone, and (2) peaking on Hydrogen phone? If the link makes the Hydrogen behave more like a monitor (which can magnify and can peak), then I'll buy one and try it. If all it does is reduce lag and feed power, meh.

Anyone else notice the stuttering with the wired link adaptor connection? I see it every few frames or so. It's almost like it's monitoring at 15fps or something. Just curious if others still see this or if I have a setting wrong somewhere (tried Live Stream High, Med and Low settings). Also, FYI, I cannot connect in airplane mode at all—kills any connection and communication. Works fine in regular phone mode (iPhone 12 pro).
