Hey,

I'm looking into buying a Komodo and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good insurance providers. I've never bought a high-end camera before and I'm feeling a little lost when it comes to this part of the buying process. I do plan on occasionally renting the Komodo out if that information helps - I know a lot of sets have good insurance these days but I'm really looking to play things safe.

Thanks for any advice!

Congrats Brian! I've shot Sony for years and now am in the RED universe..I had the same question. I discovered it depends on what the use is. For me, I have a side film business and needed the camera covered both stored at home(studio) and also out on projects. Other senarios may be someone does not have a side business..or may someone is renting out their RED gear..they would require either less or more insurance. I am with State Farm and they quoted me from a Inland Marine Policy. You can get Inland Marine insurance directly too. I would ask your current car/renters/home insurance company about a policy first, then shop a quote from Inland Marine. My Komodo is covered no matter what happens, dropped, broken, stolen in the house, out on location, or to and from with no deductible and full replacement. Kinda worth it.

No matter what, read the fine print, if anything is open to interpretation assume it will go in the insurance company's favor, because it will. Homeowner's insurance typically won't cover business property. If the B&H Allstate policy says damage from normal wear and tear it is safe to assume that it doesn't include a drop as that's not normal wear and tear.

I got burned when my movers stole a gang of stuff both personal and business. Homeowners insurance wouldn't cover business property and the rider to my personal liability policy only covered 50% away from home. A 1 page policy with 16 pages of fine print, sure enough, page 17, 50% away from home. What I though was production insurance was basically home fire/theft for the things my homeowners insurance wouldn't cover.

Good Luck
