  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO FIRMWARE (Beta) VERSION 1.8.5 beta (7/24/2025) & 1.8.6 Release version

I’m holding off from upgrading for the moment as I need both of my Komodo’s for current shoots.
Will try out when I get through that work.
It’s a little concerning that ProRes was not mentioned in the firmware notes.

Right, good idea. I think they mentioned the r3d to ProRes switch over but not the ProRes file corruption?

That sounds promising.
There were recent reports of people getting corrupt files on long takes that did not initially indicate any type of error.
I never saw that in my testing with 1.8.3 and .4 so hopefully that was fixed as well.
Will see.

Firmware updates have recently been a source of sturm and drang but I am hopeful this is sorted out.

Installed the new FW and switched back and forth between r3d and prores a few times without issue. The file looks OK, too... Word on the street is KX has face detect AF now? Has anyone tested it? Hopefully it comes to the OG (without having to use the app)...

Shooting with 1.8.5 today and had some weird glitches. Screen had a snowy, abstract image, then b & w and then unsupported battery error. I pulled the battery ( which is brand new OEM Canon bp) and the camera powered down. Restarted without issue but probably rolling back to 1.8.3. Anyone else have any issues?

Hopefully a random glitch and not a bug.
If it happens again save a log file before shutting down or rebooting.

MENU > MAINTENANCE > SAVE LOG.

This can help RED when troubleshooting.

Guys, be really careful with 1.8.5. New issue in addition to above is booting up to black screen (no image). Rebooted multiple times with no image. Rolled back to 1.8.3 and seems OK now. Sent log to Red.

Did RED ever follow up with you on this issue?

Yes. I described the problem and sent them the log file. They said they were looking into it but were a bit skeptical that a FW update could cause such issues. I rolled it back to 1.8.3 which seems to stable and they confirmed that was the best move…

I installed 1.8.5 and been testing the last couple of days.

The ProRes issue seems to be resolved. So far I have not seen any record errors I experienced on the earlier betas or corrupted frames that others experienced.

After several boot cycles I do think I once experienced the Komodo booting to a black screen and immediately saved a log file.

@scorsesefan Perhaps this was the error you were mentioning above.

I further played around with the Komodo in the black screen state and noticed that I did see a picture in playback but it went back to the black screen when I left playback mode.

With the screen still black, I toggle the Komodo to Log display setting and saw that the Komodo showed an image.
NOTE: This "Log" display setting was changed in the RED Control app. I believe this would be the same as MENU > MONITORING > LCD > LOOK > RWG/LOG3G10

When I toggled Log display off (which I believe is the same as going to the LOOK> IMAGE/LUT setting) I noticed the image go back to black.

I then went to MENU> IMAGE/LUT > OUTPUT COLOR SPACE> and toggled between DCI-P3/REC709/REC2020/REDWideGamutRGB.

Once I toggled these Output Color Space settings the image came back to showing an actual live image and the image stayed on.

Not sure if this is a bug with the display setting getting screwed up but it might possibly get worked around by toggling the DISPLAY PRESET between 2 different settings.

I only saw this black screen phenomena come up once after perhaps a couple of dozen boots/reboots. If this is the same issue it is likely a display setting bug.

Will send a report to RED.

Otherwise so far the firmware seems decent.

Hey Brian. Yes, this is similar to what I experienced. I also got a "snowy" screen upon boot up once, but it was mostly the black screens. Glad you sent a report to Red so we can get this sorted out...

Yes- I meant to post that there is a release version.
I installed 1.8.6 and it seems fine.
I only ever encountered the black screen on boot up once in the 1.8.5 beta across over about 30-40 boots.
The workaround I found was to toggle the Display preset function.

ProRes is also back to normal with no errors that I’ve seen.

I’m at the point of finally upgrading my other Komodo which is running 1.7.5 since 2023.

OK, that's good. So when you got the black screen you just toggled between display modes and you got the picture back?

Yes that's correct. Of course it would be best to not get the issue at all but it seems hard to reproduce.

@Brian Timmons The GIO Scope behavior issue. I must have missed that in the past. What was fixed? Thinking I might bump up to 1.8.6 if it seems stable.
