After searching around on the forum I’m coming up empty on this one, so here it is:

1. Does the Komodo 6k record in 12 bit or 16 bit?

2. Do we have a thread with all the known specs?

Surely this is a little bit of a overly simplistic question (and answer)... a 16bit linear encode can still be limited in the shadows if the camera has over 14stops of latitude... and conversely a 12bit log (or similar) encode could be fantastic especially at the same data rate (basically less compressed)...

Maybe I am wrong (and Red has explicitly stated the encode is linear and therefore 16bit is essential?) but I feel personally inadequate predicting the quality of a camera from simple, and often engineering truth obsvicating, ‘fact’! .... has Red even confirmed this is a DCT encode? I suspect there is a complicated truth behind the numbers that is beyond my understanding.

For a confusing bit of fun record on any other Red camera at a specific compresssion ratio ... multiply the file size by the compression ratio and tell me how many bits you think you find?

Resolution is 7680x4320=>33.177.600 pixel, x16 bit=>530.841.600 bit, /8=>66.355.200 Byte, /1.048.576=>63.28125 MByte...compression is 5:1, so /5=>12.65625 MB is expected.

so I'm lacking 1.75 MB. Where's my bytes? :cuss:
 
Compression is a distinct process from the first stage linear AD sampling. Compression ratios of less than 3:1 can preserve mathematically lossless original data values on decompression. Compression ratios above that are “lossy” with log compression curves applied to preserve all the available DR range of the sensor. Fine detail degrades progressively in the lowest stops of DR. If the log curve and the compression ratio work well, the result is called “visually lossless” because the way our brain processes images also ignores fine detail in deep shadows.
The sample rate is independent of the sensor analog DR. Digital encoding just applies a numeric scale to a defined range of analog voltage values. It is the analog voltage range of the sensor that determines DR.
