  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo 12.2 stops of dynamic range in CineD test.

It’s six thousand dollars, not five. The “discount” many waited for and few got felt like an f you and an inconvenience to those at red, nothing more. The window was not clear, the site mysteriously stopped taking orders in its final week? Really not a good look for red. For what could have been 1/6th the loss they now lose 100% by people going to other cameras. As multiple REDUSERs have stated they did. Really too bad. At least Jason mamoa and you tubers have cameras (to flip). Unfortunately for true red users and hydrogen believers and purchasers we are left behind.

I really don't understand why people keep saying that things were unclear. The discount window was clear for a long time before people could even start buying Komodo and the discount window was also very clear. And I don't understand why people just seem to be unable to contact Red support if the last week of the discount happened at the same time as they stopped taking orders because of too many orders.

I don't consider myself as a "true red user", even if I own a Red, because I don't care about stuff like that. It's a camera that is good, but I use lots of other stuff as well. It's just that I own Red gear and therefore I'm here. I got the discount because I actually looked things up since it's in my best interest to do so in order to get the discount. I don't get the discount handed to me on a silver platter. And even during ordering Komodo, there were all those problems with EU VAT and Red UK and stuff, so I just got in contact with Red support to sort things out.

So many comments and opinions have been expressed, angry that they missed stuff or that Red somehow treated them bad and unfair... But I didn't get extra love by Red, I'm probably their most aggravating customer because I'm so vocal about everything I have an opinion of. I know Jarred's gotten pissed at me a few times, so what type of "true red user" am I then?

Red communicated. I could argue that Jarred should have been more open in this forum rather than his Instagram, but then again it took 10 seconds for a copy of that post to reach both this forum and the Facebook forum. If people get pissed because they don't get served on a silver platter and instead need to check some things themselves, and then still wait throughout the discount window until the last second to order and get into trouble because of that and also not contacting Red support to try and sort things out and instead just write how other Redusers are entitled and get treated better then them... they may need a reality check.

Can we return to the topic of dynamic range please?

BTW talking of dynamic range and color clipping and white balance... here are tests I did AGES ago (and sent to Panasonic) when pinpointing some issues with the GH4.

Matt Uhry, Macgregor and I tested a F35 against a GH4 shooting real-world stuff and forum folks were PISSED that the GH4 didn't do better... exactly the same as folks are in a huff right now :) I remember exactly the same mean comments too about how if we couldn't make the GH4 look good, we obviously didn't know what we were doing. Deja vu!

After the real-world tests, I went and followed up by putting colored gels in front of Stouffer wedges and got some weird results. What was interesting was that some modes were linear-ish and others were just horribly wiggly... and white balance mattered A LOT.

Anyone want to do this again in 2021 except put some gels in front of some Xylas? A whole stack of Xylas is kinda out of my budget.

PS funny seeing me advocating for Panasonic to allow a crazy idea called "raw output via HDMI" back in early 2014 haha...
