  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Been editing my Epic stuff natively in FCPx for about 6 months now but we've never had to do chroma keying until this current project so I'm not exactly up to speed on best practices for working with R3D's in FCPx when keying.

Tried to pull a quick & dirty key on native R3D's yesterday as a test after our shoot and the freaking thing simply wouldn't work properly, so I tried exporting out a ProRes4444 & that did better but I've gotten so use to working native that I'd like to avoid transcoding if possible.

What's the accepted chroma key workflow when using R3D's & FCPx?

It's strange I've tried to use it for a while on R3Ds too. It won't work straight up but if you use the qualifiers instead its fine. You have to adjust in the color wheel def a bug I reckon.

I've tried using the sample color tool but that never works the same on R3D's as it does anything else. Guess I can try your suggestion of using the color wheel to find my green but that seems like I'm guessing more than selecting my exact green.

So just to be clear, you are getting native R3D's to key in FCPx using their built in keyer? Maybe I can give it another shot.

Just been trying this myself and have the same problem. It seems to want to do a luma key. Works fine on non-r3d stuff...

Yes Native R3Ds. Use the color wheel and re adjust the values. The other controls related to the sample color tool are disabled in this mode. It can work really well

I'll do this today, thanks for the tip. Time to do some reading & see what the controls on the manual color wheel do. Sometimes I really wish the program was a little clearer about how things work. Seems they like to make an attractive interface but forget to clearly label what everything adjusts, or they use odd terminology for common tools.

Hmmmm... I dropped a 4K green screened R3D clip over a 1080P background and got an incredibly clean key with almost no tweaking at all. I was actually sort of surprised. I rarely do much with keying so I am hardly an expert. Beginner's luck, perhaps.

That's pretty much how everything except R3D's work for me. For some reason I can take the same clip at the same resolution with the same look applied, one as an R3D and one as a ProRes & only the ProRes keys right on the first try.

Richard - when using the graph (color wheel) on manual, how the heck do you know if it's luma or chroma that you're adjusting? Neither adjustment is identified in any way as far as I can tell.

It's in the fcpx manual. They are bound by certain rules. Once you play a bit you will work it out.

That's worked for me exactly like that with Pro Res, but I can't get R3Ds to work. What version of FCP X are you using?

Prior to FCPX 10.1, I had to transcode the red footage before keying it. Even if I tried keying it and then transcode, it wouldn't work. Transcode the clip first.

Now that FCPX 10.1 has come out as of today, I haven't tested it yet. Still trying to understand the whole Library thing (as it pertains to my current feature film).

Guess this answers nothing but thought I'd just chime in.
