KETCH ROSSi

I happen to think so too... :)

Hope to put some good amount of Underwater images on it... With the new Sigma Art 24mm F1.4, the H2O OLPF and the A-RED Ewa-Marine Splash Bag...

Great stuff Ketch

Thanks Raphael... Wait till you see what I am really up to... :)

Hey Ketch, is that a rehoused Canon there?

I love that lens.

What did this version cost you?

Hey Gunleik,

Yes this is the GL Optix 70-200 Compact, the new design smaller and lighter then version one, original lens is the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 USM. It sales for $6.000 (US)

The 70-200 2.8L Canon is one of my absolute favorite lenses. Color rendition and bokeh are excellent. Most of all, I love the rate of focus falloff it offers - some lenses manage to go from sharp to mush so quickly that it feels too "forced", too un-real (yes, that can be a plus sometimes). The 70-200 gives you good figure-ground separation - AND - a little "shoulder room" so if the subject moves a little too much, they go slightly soft rather than completely OOF. YMMV.

Cheers - #19

And thanks to Matt at Duclos lenses, my SUPER pristine set of Mamiya has returned home... Ready to play on Dragon 6K while waiting for Weapon 8K... :)

This extremely selected glass has come from Japan to the USA, then recently returned to a very special lens lab in Japan, then Germany, were they have been completely rebuilt inside out, and back to the USA to the crafty lab at Duclos were they got a Cine Gear ring of equal pitch for perfect Focus Pulling in a professional environment, and a 80mm front ring to allow for faster swap when using a MB avoiding the need to change Donuts and also getting the little extra depth needed to embrace the MB donut properly.

Ok traveling to beautiful location full set of filters, fun RC for camera shots... and play, and now the lenses,,,,now Im jealous. You have all the toys Ketch. I worked in China on a project and the monk at the top of 700 plus stairs in the monastery said to us these words..."Good Choices, Good Life" I think that sums up working with RED.

I hope to build up a MF set or glass my self. Any suggestions for maybe a 3 or 4 lens starter kit?
Enjoy, I know I would..I mean will... positive thinking...

And maybe you can answer something for me and others... will the MF glass cover that last little bit on the corners of Weapon 8K that seems to me to over lap the Circle on Phil's chard when using very wide lenses? This is the teal or blue circle that covers FF35.

Ha ha... Some times I am jealous of myself Russ, but only sometimes... :)

Good words from the Monk...

In MF glass there are various choices, all good, some better then others for different reasons... One also must consider budget.

Modern AF MF glass does not have a Manual Iris, and till RED can see to add them to the electronic control system as they did and continue to do with Canon/Nikon/Sigma glass there will be no real good way to use them on RED, even so there is work arounds, this would need to have a MF body with to set the aperture electronically at each time then lock remove from body and attach to the RED, but also this can't be done for all lenses either... So it would be painful.

Older MF glass with Manual Iris is really the only good and best option till the above can happen from RED, which I doubt it might happen, if it happens, which I hope it does, till the Weapon 8k VV comes out and about.

On the Manual Iris arena of MF glass there are several good choices, again depending on budget and needs...

I have loved the Zeiss/Hassy and now the Fuji/Hassy too, love the Leica S2 glass, just stunning, and super expensive, I like the Contax and have had good experiences, but I have favored Mamiya as far as I can remember when dealing with Manual Iris lenses.

This come in the original C versions, then came the S version and lastly the N version, all have the same exact glass, just slightly better coating on the N version, but the S's and N's add a bit of plastic here and there, but maintain the same original design as the first C's and in all fairness I like them all, but prefer the look of both S's and especially N's, as it has been easier to also find a color manhood set.

The look however does not change too drastically at all, and it is not hard to get a full set of C's, mixed in with S's and N's, as you won't otherwise be able to compete a full set.

Just for the record when I say S's and N's, I speak from MF talk, but what I mean, is really Mamiya Sekor C S or C N, as and then there is also some A M, all great, need to chose Mamiya 645 when looking for them, but there also are other options in the 67 R Z body.

Many options... :)

As far as covering, worry not, this MF glass is made to cover a much larger MF sensor then that of even the Weapon 8k, so you'll se NO vignetting at all even with their widest lens, which is a 35mm Rectilinear on Maimya 645, as the 24mm Fisheye does't really count... The 30mm on Leica S2, and 24mm on Hassy (new Fuji/Hassy Af no Manual Iris).

What you'll love most in fact as every one I know did when showing some tests done with the widest MF glass on the Dragon vs, same perspective S35 lens, is that even so the opposite might be also a rectilinear wide, when compared to the MF the edges of frame appear some how different with a perceptiveness of a much straiter, or complete luck of edge bending, curving as we see in some really wide shots in S35, which I particularly dislike and reason which I have always avoided Super Wides since day one of my Photography over 30 years ago!!

I'll be shooting some stuff soon, and I'll post it here as well, but the real tests won't come around till after I return door this movie project in the Mauritius and go to Abu Dhabi, were I'll be working on my next Movie project and will do some testing with the above said about perspectives in the wides on MF glass and Weapon 8K... And can't wait... :)

Best of luck with your hunt Russ!

Thank you so much Ketch. Always looking for some reliable info and I knew you could give me a start.
Not really sure what Ill end up with but I now have some good info to help with that search.
My blessings to your next shoot..be safe.
Oh I almost forgot to ask... how are you strapping these on the camera? what sort of conversion did Matt do to make them comparable with your camera...Im guessing some sort of Canon mount so you could use them with the Motion Mount... I know thats what I would go for but Im not sure how that might work or if its even possible with the MF glass...Suggestions on mounting please?

My pleasure Russ, always!

And thank you for the blessing, I always keep safe, with calculated risk taken for any shot... Life is still more important then even the best shot ever seen!!

This are still in their original Mamiya 645 Mount, I use a Mamiya to PL adapter form Les in UK, but Matt is working on announcer one... :)

As far as utilizing the MF glass with the Motion Mount, Canon or PL there is no problem, you can either get a Mamiya to Canon (not any available that are well built unfortunately) or go to PL (better option for the adapter) as I did.

The Mamiya 645 was an obvious first choice for me do to my past use of them and having a load of lenses form past years, so for this reason all I had to do is buy few more, and then send them off to Japan to pick them apart and get the best set out of it.

But my next step will be most likely in the rehousing of Hassy lenses, and I'll also be looking in to the Leica S series.

Finally on location at the Mauritius for an other great #R3D adventure... This time as Cinematographer for a Bollywood Feature... Such a beautiful and exotic locations ahed... Can't wait to share some BTS imagery... And yeah I know, traveling light as usual... But I think is going to be my last one traveling alone this way... While it's always a tremendous pleasure and lots of fun... It's also getting more and more of a pain in the "ASS" carrying this much gear around the world alone... :)

Bollywood feature! Nice!

Yes Nick, nice indeed, also because I finally accepted to do one, after truanting down several other opportunity to Direct/DP a feature, but I guess all the wheels were moving in the right direction for this one... So I accepted the challenge... :)
