  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KETCH ROSSi

NEXT... I'll do some WO shots, but those I'll need to do in a controlled environment, and looking forward to test the 85mm with the 10x Diopter... ;)

Overall I can say that even so my hearth does cry out for the need that has arise which prompted me to purchase this lenses, I fear not that even with the world's cheapest Cine (kinda of) lenses, I will put out a great product just the same, might not be as great of course as if was shot on Master Primes, and will not have those super shallow depth of field dramatic takes, might not be as Breathing Free, or as Chromatic Aberration Free, or.... WHATEVER.... But it will be great just the same... ;)

Sweet rides :) thanks for sharing Ketch!

How did you choose the lenses? Did you handpick them or just take one each?
I'd like to find out if they are comparable all the way through the production batch or if there are any noteable differences from lens to lens. Since these are not AF lenses and the marks are not really useable anyway is there anything to pay attention to?

My pleasure Patrick!

I ordered the lenses form Amazon USA, and put them on camera and shot, no in studio testing or anything, not really worth the waist of my time, after all this are stupid cheap lenses, and can't be expected too much of them, yet they impressed me, and I stopped crying (a little) about having sold my Master Primes... ;)

If I was to shoot in a control environment, in a studio with lights and a focus puller, on a tripod, I know I'll get much better shots, also need to Grade and Sharpen all images, which I did not do so here.

So, no one has any excuse not to take good shots because they say they don't have Master Primes to shoot them with... And that includes me too... ;)

yes it's sad to see you had to sell so much kit, especially when you look at the beginning of the thread:

But I know you're heart is in the right place to do what you love and get it right!

Oh, that is nothing, that was just the beginning, and only RED gear, 5 Epic cameras, 5 sets of RPP, 3 sets of RPZ's, Master Primes, Ultra Primes, Special lenses, Canon L series, form 14mm to 800mm, Lights, Grip, the list is long is not even funny... But it maters not... I am a WARRIOR, and Persevere I will, and the Rokinon, should I not come to be able to use anything else, will make a great Film nonetheless, as the story is simply a Uniquely crafted Dramatic romance based on a tremendously sad truth of the unspoken violence that is happening today around the world against Women.

BTW... Funny that I didn't see any Ferrari's on the street yesterday... The are al out today that I put the Epic away... ;)

Classic!!

Good thing is that I am so close to Maranello, so not only I'll go shoot them, but I'll also get to drive them... ;)

Hehehe! I know your list was much, much longer. But the image just represents it pretty well :)

Weird, your images are not showing up in the text. Just below as attached...

Chin up my friend. You did it once, and you will do it again! I believe in you. And so do a lot of others on here!

O no... I did it 3 times already... so one more will not kill me, and this will be the good one, the one that will count for all of them put together... ;)

Hmm weird. Because I am... well I don't want to derail ;) Keep on posting these bad boys :)

He he, it's okay, done posting for now... Next are the girls, then after I see that I can use this lenses for Skin and possibly some landscapes, then I'll shoot the first Short with them, and move on to the Kikstarter campaign for the Movie.

I think it's a good move you made here, even if it was not deliberate. Pixel peeping and gear lust are the enemy of creativity. Too many people are loosing their time and sometimes their life just waiting for better equipment and doing tests over and over instead of just shooting interesting stories or concepts. People are watching movies on iphones, ipads, TVs with totally different quality, dvds, divx, etc etc, and they don't care if it was shot on 4k or 5k, or 2k, or if you can read the text on the shop in the image when you zoom 400%. We should just be aware of what we can have at the moment and write and shoot accordingly. We just enjoy a good story at the end.

Well, I do agree with you here no doubt, and I have never been one of those pixel pipping, no ever, even when I was shooting on a MF Back @80 MP's, and with Epic I wanted to use the best available Glass, Master Primes, not to pixel pip, but to insure I had the best image quality, and capacity to go as wide open as I needed to in order to fit my need in the storytelling to dramatize and or isolate a given subject via the use of extreme shallow depth of field.

And while yes, people do also see movies on portables, there is still a serious need of preservation of your material for the future, and my work will never be considered or done in a way to be simply a consumable, but a work of art to be preserved and enjoyed by future generations, and for this I wanted to capture it in the highest resolution and highest quality, fortunately I do have the tool for that, the Red Epic, (hopefully Dragon) but otherwise MX will do just fine, and I will not shoot anything less then full available Raw resolution for a 4k finish.

However in this case, at list for my first project if comes down to, I will not deeper or not wait around just because I can't shoot it on Master Primes, I'll shoot it on Rokinon cause they were the absolute cheapest solution I could find that still allowed me to shoot it in a Cine style, well kinda of, because of course you can't meter your distances and trust their focus markings which ion the other end you completely can with Master Primes, and that is an other reason of Pro Cine optics vs. simple wanna be cine lenses as the Rokinon, but if this is what I have, means that the focus puller, if we'll have one, will need to focus by eye... ;)

What are you going to do for a 50mm?

I have had every Rokinon since they first came out and I love the lenses. Most the time people think I have shot on Cookes... it is strange. But there is a lack of a 50m lens in the set. The closest match to the rest of the set that I can find is the Canon f1.4 50mm... but the focus throw is absolute crap on that lens. The image matches well, but the build is terrible. Zeiss lenses don't match colourwise to the rokinons.

Best of luck on your movie.

Ivan

Truth to be told Ivan, I really never made much use of the 50mm in any of my work since youngster in Photography, but also considering the crop factor of the Rokinon to the Epic sensor, the 35mm is actually pretty long as to replace the 50mm, that in theory of course... ;)

At the end this set is only my personal set of lenses that replaced my Master Primes... For the time been... :(

But I hope that things will change soon and that I can once again have a decent full set of lenses... Till then however, I am content with the Rokinon and what they offer, especially at the crazy low price point, no one can not and should not complain at all, but more Focal will be very welcome by all, the 50mm as you mentioned been one, and for my taste a 100 or even a 135mm would be great, but again, by the time this might come out I hope I do have resolved my financial situation once again and have my set of real Cine Primes... ;)

And I thank you Ivan on my Movie wishes!

For telephoto just use the Canon F2.8 70-200. Also get the rokinon 85, and the tokina 11-16 of course... you should have close to a full kit at that point...

I do have the Rokinon 85mm, very nice, and had the Duclos modified 11-16 and sold it, nice lens as well, as for the Canon 70-200 had them all, and of course the latest incarnation is an absolute fantastic lens, but for the price of IT, I got the entire set of Rokinon, also I make heavy use of the MB with Circular Polarizer and ND's so the Rokinon fit better this purpose, but the 70-200 is actually my favorite Zoom, I loved the 24-70 for years in Photography, but for cine work it does suck big time that they did their V.2 still with moving elements... :(

Yeh, I am actually considering getting rid of my 24-70 for that reason (until they fix it that is).

Keep your eyes opened with the rokinon 24mm... it is a touch softer than the rest of the set.
