  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Kessler Cine Drive with Red Epic

Hey Paul,

Have you checked out the motion control setup at Sugino Studio yet?

http://www.suginostudio.com/infrastructure/

I've been doing a bunch of work to test the limitations of the Cinedrive. For timelapse it has been working great, working with Canon 1D and C300...no problem. Epic is definitely max'ing out it's payload though and I find the shuttlepod rails take a while to level out to a smooth roll at 12'.

Firmware version 2D seems to be having a pretty serious problem with drift on multi-pass takes. I just tried a four pass shot and nothing was lining up where the replicated model walks out like a chorus line, moves to three positions on the bike, cleans it for a moment before the fourth girl enters screen left with a camera and everyone smiles for the camera. Unlike the simple matting professed in this video (https://vimeo.com/63257831), this shot took about a week of After Effects work to make everything seamless. Each shot has to be motion stabilized and keyframe adjusted before roto and matting. Unfortunately Kessler don't have a list of known bugs with current firmware so I was only able to find this problem after the shoot.

I just had another entire day shoot basically die as the cinedrive tilt stopped working during a critical shot, had to reset the system like 3 times. I'm downgrading the cinedrive from beta to a toy.

my tilt axis was failing as well recently, repeatedly had to unplug and replug motor, then it zoomed back on its own and smacked into the back of the 5 foot slider.

after way too many attempts at focus control i took it off and just did pan tilt, cleared all points and rebooted and it was fine for the rest of the day except for the occasional overshoot on the slider.

They really need to nail the firmware next time around.

Agreed, the firmware is really in beta, pretty serious bugs in every release. Patrick/Paul, what firmware version are you running? Did you contact Kessler, and if so, what was their reply?

v2D seems ok for timelapse but the system no longer has any precision whatsoever. I've rolled back to v2C and lost the new timelapse functionality but it is more precise. There is a nasty bug with v2C where if you plot two key frames with an axis that stays the same (dolly/pan with no tilt) the axis without a move swings into a seemingly random position when you run the move. The work-around is to disable that axis or add a small move to it.

Currious to hear which firmware version you're on and if Kessler had any reply.

Paul & Paul, I have been in contact with Kessler and I now have a couple of new people working my problems. My current workaround, that is so far removing most my problems, is disconnecting the cable to the tilt section (i.e. the cable between the pan area and the tilt area - so i manually move the tilt axis [i thus can only do slider/pan/focus moves]). Also by using the windows 8 software with current patches it seems fairly stable(i have given up on the ipad interface). I will continue testing this week (the guy at kessler who is reviewing my tests seems real committed to making this right, I'm sure they are more irritated by these problems then I am).
