  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Kenyon Gyro

I own a couple on Ken labs gyros, they are great when you need them but other than some sort of stabilizer rig, what would you use them for?

I have two KS-4 units for sale. They're in excellent condition.

Thanks for the response guys - have been contracted to film wildlife/sealife sequences out at sea from a 25ft open-style runabout. Am looking for maximum stability, hence the question.

Glen, I wonder if the KS4s are big enough for the job - if you think they are, I'd be interested in exploring it further.

I don't think the KS-4's by themselves would provide enough stability. That being said, they could vastly improve the stability of a stedicam or other stabilizing rig.

Hi first post waiting on the Scarlet and hope to upgrade from XDCAM EX1.

I use 6 - KS-8's on a custom Aerial Exposure rig and you would need in my opinion at least 4 KS-8's to do the job properly. Two KS-12's would be perfect but very heavy and at 10K each expensive unless you use it all the time.

Kenyon Labs does rent and they are excellent to work with on projects.

Thanks for your thoughts Paul, have decided to start with one KS-12 and see how we go. Will post pix once all set up.

Note that a single gyro only stabilizes two axis, not all three.
So usually it's better to use at least two smaller units at different orientation, than a single big one.

Joe the KS-12 is an excellent choice but as Anders points out you should use two gyros to cover all axis. Also the KS-12 runs on 28 volts and all the others are 14 volts.

But from our test two KS-12's are better then the 6 KS-8's. The problem we have is our R44 is a 14 volt machine so we would have to carry batteries. UGH we are at max weight now with full fuel, pilot, producer, Gyro rig, an shooter. Two 60 lb batteries won't work.

I guess it is time to move up to a Jet Ranger.

I think the KS-12 are overkill for the Red One (unless You are stabilizing it with the 18-85). From my experience 3x KS-8 is already more then enough. The thing with kinetic stabilizers is that there is no such a thing as "enough". By all means - if Your budget is unlimited - get 6x KS-12's (And You will need Rambo to operate the camera), but if You are after economical solution - 3x KS-6 will go a long way for their value...

Just my two cents... :)

Peter my example of 6 KS-8 is for shooting out of a R44 helicopter with our Aerial Exposure Rig modified where 3 KS-8 would not cut it. But for hand held I use 2 KS-8 plus battery due to the weight. If Joe has the camera on a base 2 KS-12 will be a very nice combination but with 2 KS-12 it can not be hand held for more then a few minutes.

hehe... how much would 3 KS-6s weigh?

Thanks. So the KS-6 is listed as weighing 3.25 lbs. So you're talking about adding roughly 10 lbs with a three-gyro KS-6 setup. I guess you just wear the batteries as a waste belt or something?

Correct the battery comes with a belt attached. 3 KS-6 is not much of a load. I carry two KS-8 and battery for 3.5 hrs before I have to change battery. The battery is cheap so if you shoot all day it is worth having two. Very long charge time (lead Acid).

Paul, I also shoot out of the R44. I have a custom rig that attaches to the body - so no FAA approval is needed. You can also jump onto other helis, or any other moving craft for that matter...

If Epic is still going to be about 1/3 lighter then Red One - we should be able to stabilize it nicely with two KS-6. And Scarlet is going to be whole another animal...

Can't wait!!! :)
