I'm looking for some opinions on whether or not I should sell my RED rocket. I'm shooting with a pretty basic Scarlet package, and had picked up a used RED rocket when I was getting all my stuff. Was nice playing 4k full time. However I now mainly edit on a pretty powerful PC and don't need to use the RED rocket to play anything. It currently sits in my older Mac Pro and I use it periodically to do ProRes Transcodes, but thats about it. I could really use the money to get some other accessories I've been wanting. It all sounds pretty much like its leaning towards selling, however I guess I'm worried about possibly needing it in the future. Any thoughts or maybe what would you do in my situation?

Is there anyone around you thy does some REDrocket rentals or can lend you one? If so this may be the solution. Whenever you need a RR, just rent if for the day. Otherwise, jut go with your powerhouse.

I edit on a powerful PC...although playback can be done realtime at 1/2 or 1/4 rez....it is output to 1080p that kills me...

can easily be 10 times realtime....thats why I got a rocket

Marc, maybe you can put the older Mac Pro to work by doing transcodes for people without Red Rockets. Should pay for itself in relatively short amount of time and then you have the Rocket and some extra money in your pocket for other gear.

If you don't use it, sell it. I use mine for transcodes only, which currently applies to every job I shot.

Don't forget to take a look at Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.

Today is an interesting day for this decision. REDRAY could be the RR killer, or at least the "prequel."

It's dated tech that is the best option for Full rez 4k playback. Three years old. The RR has had an amazing life by any standard in the tech industry.

The rocket may be on its way out, but redray is a completely different product....
It just plays back RED code not r3d....no debayering at all

I like that Idea, I guess I just havent looked for people that need this and never been asked. Hmmm....

My biggest thing I guess is I'm making a location move in a month. I'm moving from a slow low budget town (Tallahassee, FL) down to Ft. Lauderdale in hopes of creating more work eventually. The work I do now usually doesn't require transcoding because most my jobs I'm the one doing all the post work anyways so I can work however I want. I feel like down south I'll probably get more jobs that require me to send the footage off to the client, so the transcoding could become more desired. However like I said, new accessories would be nice (could use a better rig, or tripod, or what not).

Now dealing with the RedRay, is this only for 4k displays/Projecting? I'm assuming it doesnt speed up transcodes, which is my main reason for keeping the RR. Maybe I just don't understand the RedRay I dont know.

I know It's going to come down to my personal preference/desire and I'm still kind of being cyclical, however this is really helping, so thanks for the responses guys. It's sounding to me like I should wait till I'm in a bigger market and see how the Rocket plays there.

The RedRay is for playback only. Encoding for its file format is via Redcine-X Pro with a $20 RREncode licence (included with purchase of a RedRay player or projector). A Red Rocket would be useful for transcodes of Red R3D files to RedRay .RED files.
