I like how the article makes it seem like they are the first to figure out how to process the size of the 4K image inside the camera, rather than capture it RAW and to a RAID array...

But alas, yes, I like the specs.

$4.995 retail

1/2" CMOS 8.3 MP

3840×2160 px at 24p, 50p, or 60p.

(records up to two hours of 4K video to SDHC or SDXC cards)

live 4K output via four HDMI terminals

+ 1080i or 1080/60p full HD recording option

Nope no hating it... the fact that bit rate is up to 144 Mbps is cool. This will be a great little camera for a lot of people.

This should make all the pissed off people happy who wanted a fixed lens. I'm keen to see what type of compression the Canon 4k DSLR has and image quality as a run and gun camera.

Canon F***ed up!!!

I wouldn't say that. C300 is a cam that will be used a lot for very good reasons.

These days I am teaching a bunch of photographers here how to use R1 MX as simple as you can use the C300.
THAT capacity is really undersold (except for by Maestro Toia here)

But it is a hard sell... :)

Now it's Panasonic's turn to join the party with a 2/3" 4k camera with similar specs and interchangeable lenses:) That would give us 4K in 1/2", 2/3", 35mm CMOS imagers.

yeah, I guess a lot of the people who can't afford the X now, will probably jump aboard.
Since JVC is first with a fixed all in one solution, they will get the early adopters and maybe the old scarlet crowd.

But for me, I'm happy waiting for my X in all her MODULAR RED RAW 35mm CANON MOUNT glory :)

edit: and the LEICA M and the PL MOUNT and the.... :)

And you should be! :)

I think Canon messed up. No 4k, and a crappy codec at the price listed on a PRO camera marketed to filmmakers... ouch. I like this camera better for a lot of reasons. It's a serious investment in a format that will disappear sooner rather then later. Europe has been somewhat slow on the 1080p. they can just jump to 4k.

That's a lot better than I was fearing. 144 Mbps is pretty good. I am assuming it is an extension of AVCHD 2.0 which performs OK at 24 Mbps for 1/4th the pixels. The only concern is the sensor - 8.3 MP is a lot of pixels crammed into a 1/2 inch sensor. But let's wait and see how it performs. Either way, there's surely a whole array of inexpensive QFHD camcorders coming in 2012 - this is just a glimpse of things to come. Watch out for more at CES!

As a side note - it is clearly targeting the EX1/3 market. EX owners haven't really had anything to upgrade to!

I think they'll def sell a shit load of these. For many..including me...it's not that I was disappointed in the Scarlet x....its that I can no longer afford it. I'll def be looking into this cam for my generic corporate stuff. Then renting the Scarlet X for bigger better stuff until I can buy one.

Something else I thought was funny. in the press release it says that 4k is four times the quality of HD. How can they state this in the press release when it's not true? haha

really interested in the first resolution measurements of the 4K delivery of the cam and it's first pictures
as well as skew and moiré

Patrick, I can't begin to tell you how amazed I am at the Scarlet after having it for one day. The image quality per frame is at the stills level is unreal. Red is a real pro camera, and really not for everyone because of the cost of SSD's etc. If you want to make high quality TV or films, there is no really affordable equal. I would keep your eye on a scarlet. This new JVC camera is cool because it really satisfies the "good enough" prosumer crowd. People will do amazing things with it, but like the C300, the image won't compare. I'm editing 5d footage today, and all I can think is F*&^K, I wish I had scarlet last year with the shit I have seen and filmed this year. 5D HD footage is not good enough for me anymore.
