Any chance that our Scarlets will be able to step up to the plate? I'd be stoked to shoot 4k 60p even at a higher compression. Anyways, I know RAW is valuable but clients rarely see or care about what raw can do for you. 60p slomo in 4k might sell some projects though. If hate to loose those projects or worse, rent a jvc camcorder to do the work.

I wish I could not comment here.. This camera with is h.264 coded and its fixed lens and its well the list of downfalls is long is not in competition with a Scarlet. If you need 4k real 4k 60 or 120 or more in lower rent an epic for one day.

I agree with Sean, That would be a situation where you would bring out the Epic if you had one or rent and Epic. I'm pretty sure the current electronics in the Scarlet aren't capable of handling 60P at 4K. Thats one of the main reasons why the scarlet is less than half the price of the Epic. It may happen with the Dragon upgrade, but not on the current configuration.

Posting the JVC is going to be interesting if this illustration is true... record four quadrants at 1080p 60 fps, one to each of 4 SD cards...

Takes to a whole new level DIT skills. 4 times the upload, 4 times the checking, 4 times the transferring to another HD. 4 times the chance of getting those little bitty cards muddled or lost & 4 times the stress of knowing if your "got it in the can". Plus a fixed lens how much better can it get!

Fixed lens? You might as well make a Ferrari that only goes straight. Sign me up :)

Funny, given the SCARLET we drooled over for years had a fixed lens.... ;)

That said, I imagine this thing is going to be "ok" for run and gun shooters that feel they need to be in the 4K realm, but I certainly wouldn't compare it to Scarlet on image size alone.

You are correct. I just got back from the CES show and the JVC camera has 4 SD cards (and 4 HDMI outputs) that each record 1/4 of the sensor with a small bit of overlap. The 4 channels then have to be stitched back together in post. The JVC rep said that the show footage that was playing (it was 4K and clean but had a smidg of noize in the darks) was manually stitched in FCP since the JVC plug-in was not ready yet. He said the stitch plug-in would be ready in March to ship with the camera. This is not the first time this approach has been taken to deal with the bandwidth issue of HD streams. I believe some HD projectors do the same. If it works then JVC just moved the goal line - if it doesn't then . . . they still suck.

Easily the dumbest idea anyone has ever come up with EVER
Not that dumb : with 4 SDXC 64 GB, you can record 4 hours (256GB) @ 4K for less than 400 $. 2 sets of SDXC and you can shoot a whole day (8 hours). 4 SDXC (especially the newest ones with Ultra High Speed) work pretty fast (writing & offloading), you can buy them almost everywhere and it's unexpensive & reliable. Just grab 2 dual slots SDXC USB 3.0 readers and you're ready ! The HMC10 is also able to do a real time full debayer and resize of the 4K full sensor (no line skipping here, it's a pic resize like you would do in photoshop) to a full HD stream on a single SDHC/SDXC. Results will be interesting. Add to this 60fps slo-mo and this ENG cam is perfect for news/docs.

They also work on a interchangable version with Nikon mount/larger sensor.

That's a bit harsh. JVC's implementation is just a means to an end. I remember not long ago pros considered the RED workflow absurd. If they have a fairly usable utility to stitch the 4 streams together then they'll be putting 4K footage on inexpensive media. That's pretty remarkable. Anyway this camera should be an effective stepping stone...

I may get one for a B-Cam for events and such. It sounds like a deal for me. 4K for slightly over 4K. Not bad.

Though the final image quality is not raw or even close to RED's standards, it is interesting that they've (at least claimed) to pack the required processing power in the body to capture and compress 60 4K frames per second. If i remember correctly, processing power/data throughput is the Sreason the Scarlet over crank at high resolutions. I wonder how they're doing this.

Falconbrid low voltage 40nm processor.

I wonder how they put together the final image mixing the 4 quadrants... technically, I mean.
BTW everything new is welcome, also if it never can reach the quality of the REDRAW and the whole world we know inside of it.
Thinking about poor postproduction quality - kind of wonderful 4k artifacts in H264 codec compression... we'll see all of this in the 4k greatness
But I think it's an amazing experiment indeed.
Who knows what the future will bring us??
And lastly (and I think also Jim agrees with me) I'm a real fan of the umanity evolution and the men always researching something
newer and better then others. In this case, in the future digital cinema field, I hope (I'm sure) that the next years (as the present)
will be REDDISH, but I honestly don't care if the step beyond will come from another brand. 5d mark II theached us something in this matter, I think...

it was bound to happen, at least someone came out with a small sensor 4k ENG camera. Too bad for the codec though.
