  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just thinking...

Hi there:

Would it be nice if we can control all the parameters of the SCARLET via wi-fi with an I-PHONE application????

Just wonder...

Gaston

I like your idea, but....
I could see a number of complications arising if you tie the use of your phone up in a busy production.
That's why I'd suggest the ipod touch instead.
If I'm not mistaken, it has the exact same Wifi capabilities as an iphone.

The thought has been up before I think...

And since I'm an avid opponent to the big Steve Jobs Cult I have been thinking of some kind of weird direct-input-compability via USB or something. Youknow, plug in a Saitek X52 Throttle and get programmable buttons and levers for all of the features. Framerate-ramping mapped to the main throttle, zooming mapped to a thumb-screw, focusing mapped to another. Couple that to the joystick mapped to a tenchnocrane-clone and you'll really "flying" the scarlet at shoots :)

And what's under the safety-switch? you guessed it! 180fps burst! aka:

I'm getting tired, aren't I...

Well I'm actually more of an premiere pro person, the avid-part was more of a weird selection of word-coincidence... and no... when it comes to platforms I'm an atheist. I just think it's scary that if one is a mac-user you HAVE to like anything that comes from Steve Jobs. And if I bring up any flaw I have found with mac it gets denied in a way that makes it look like "oh, no. The divine apple cannot be wrong!".

Windows is far from perfect and Vista seems to be ridden with flaws and bugs. But I feel more secure in a platform where users actually admit there is flaws and bugs, which is more then I get from mac-users.

But this mac vs pc war isn't something I like to get into since those threads have no end and like religion, there's no converting going on in them. So please, let's just drop that question since I'm not converting and you won't get me to. Let's make the thread a bit more productive than that.

I just wanted to suggest a platform of input-devices that would be neat to use, that wasn't tethered to a Steve Jobs product. And gaming-controllers seemed like an unexplored territory for this at the same time as they are often riddled with assignable buttons and variable output levers.

Because I do alot of different work with my computer I'm more comfortable with a PC. The experience I have is that OSX is stable because it's less targeted for those making viruses and spam/viral etc.
Because most users in this world uses Windows, it's therefor more targeted and the reason it gets unstable is often because they try to cure the symptoms rather then the desease when it occurs.
In the end we have alot of codes that are supposed to prevent things from happening.

A purely new Windows with the latest updates that are approved by Avid, without connection to internet and without anything else but programs dedicated to post production is a very freakin stable system.

Maybe it's just a mentality; whenever there's a program error on a mac and OSX, people put their hands infront of their eyes and just say (go away go away, you don't exist). Whenever an error occurs on a PC, people points at it and screams "screw you Bill Gate".

I've used both Mac and PC and I've encountered as much program errors with a MAC as with the PC.

Also, PC is modular and enables you to upgrade and do things much more then with a MAC. MAC is nicer looking and for those living in an Iapartment, it will be a clean looking thing to own. But looks can be deceiving.

I think that it doesn't matter whichever you use. I use Avid because I'm experienced with it. I don't like FCP because I'm not used to it, simple as that.
But I do not want to be forced to work with FCP just because people believe MAC is the only stable and good system (and I've encountered that in some places).

They are the same, it's just a metnality that is pure bullshit. If you favor a system, you fight for it because your used to it.
Fear of the unknown and stuff.

I think its funny when people slam Apple then, when called on it, say they don't want to get into a platform war of words.... but not before getting in a few more digs. Classic. :)

I agree about being more productive so stop the slamming.

Well... I cannot really disagree on that... that's why I just want it to stop. I won't convert anyone...

right.

So... I do see that the whole wifi-thing does open up quite a few possibilities. Especially if EVERYTHING is able to be remote controlled... even the motorized zoom/focus... talk about doing motion-control on the sheep...:) I would personally prefer the remote to run on some kind of laptop. Maybe on a Java-virtual-machine? or just a port for PC would be enough for me. Just to get all of those controls and graphs and stuff on enough screen real-estate. Direct Input would have to be run via a computer anyways for my idea of flight-stick-controlled camera. An Iphone does feel like it's too small and has to few controls for my taste.

It also opens up possibilities for custom-built lanc-like wireless remotes. Buying a jog-wheel to control maybe just speed-ramping or followfocus of the camera. Maybe with a switch to select between them? I dunno...

But first things first... there needs to be some kind of Red-console built, and then it's just a matter of porting.

Well, I was also saying
If you favor a system, you fight for it because your used to it.

Even so, I tried to be objective in my post about both systems. There are downsides of both sides I put up.

Generally I think the MAC vs PC debate often involves PC people saying MAC and PC is the same while many MAC people can't accept that.
My view on this is that there's less of a battle from the PC side and more from the MAC side. But in the process PC people tend to be called MAC bashers whenever they try to talk about the problems MAC computers might have (that are similar to PC problems).

In every MAC vs PC debate I've heard and been involved in, the PC users seem to be the more open minded ones when comparing systems.
Probably because serious PC users have more knowledge of the inner workings of a computer, while MAC is built for those who aren't interested in the technology part. That's why many MAC users seem to think their system is better because it "looks and feels" better.

I am a PC user and I know that the inner workings is the same and that OSX/MAC has the same kind of problems as windows. It's just that windows is a more targeted system and always need updates that screw around with the basic codes.
But just think linux and you get my point. A well balanced Linux is even more stable then OSX.

There's no difference in technology, but the appearance might fool some that there is. And because MAC is a more eyecatching system, some are fooled that it's more "clean" on the inside as well.

My personal observation of MAC vs PC debate concludes in my opinion that MAC users are more aggressive against PC then the other way around.
I'm not at all against OSX, if I must use it and FCP when I get my Scarlet, then so be it. I just want the possibilities to be the same on both systems.

I hope Red is working out a good compability with Avid Media Composer, windows and all those things. I'm looking forward to that.

Hope you don't mind the suggestion, but this book has helped a lot of Avid editors add FCP to their skill set.

Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors
Using Avid images and terminology, master teacher Diana Weynand shows you how to perform the tasks you’ve been doing in Media Composer by using Final Cut Pro instead. You’ll find detailed feature comparisons, practical conversion tips, and instructions on how to use Final Cut Pro features that aren’t available in Media Composer. The book makes the transition easy. Each chapter presents a complete lesson in some aspect of Final Cut Pro with a project to complete, a review section, and exercises to reinforce the lessons.

BTW, the Apple evangelical revival is hitting the road and coming to city near you soon!

Don't mind at all, thanks for the tip!
I'm probably going to edit a Red One feature this fall/winter and if Avid hasn't a good workflow I might be forced by the producer to go FCP so I'm not creating any problems for the post-house.

...think of it as expanding your customer base

Still, I'm fast as lightning in Avid so if a producer needs a slow workflow with alot of unnecessary questions, then they can go a head and put me at a FCP desk.
