Just saw 'Lone Survivor'...apart from having a lump in my throat from Marcus Luttrell's amazing story the movie was amazing. I got to see an early release, Universal sent a decent quality 35mm print (surprising!) and since it was shot on RED Epic I thought I would make a thread if anyone gets a chance to see it or if I'm a month or two ahead :P Anyways the cinematography was beautiful, the film out looked very natural and the movie made extensive use of slow motion scenes that were outstanding, I'm curious how much they over-cranked though, a few scenes where it looks like 30 or 36fps for a slight slow motion effect and a ton of scenes that look like 120 or 96fps slowed down. Loved it! Anyone gotten to have a look at it? Curious if it was shot in 6K...IMDB just says RED Epic 2.35:1..

Not 6K, it was shot with earlier builds of the EPIC. I do believe though it was captured in 5K

Figures..oh well I guess I have to wait to see some 6K movies! Although undoubtedly 5K from an Epic is beautiful, very very film looking movie even with all the slow motion. Do you know anything else about how it was shot or just guesses at this point?

The movie looked amazing on the Epic. The Colors, the sharpness were beautiful and outstanding.

Loved all the natural flares. It looked very clean/sharp and overall realistic. Great movie. Man it makes you want to stand up and doing something great.

Saw the movie yesterday. Thought it was great. Did not realize until reading this thread that it was shot on RED. How about that? Was absorbed in the movie for other reasons, never giving how it was filmed a second thought. That to me says it all. Thanks Jim...for everything.

I wonder whether the video-cam montage at the start has an effect on how people perceive the digital nature of the rest of the film? I wonder if it makes the rest of the film less questionably 'digital' in people's minds?

Eating organic food is a good start=)

I think Ben Foster is great in all movies I seen him.

It did not for me. I realized some of the BUDS section at the beginning was from previous shows I'd seen before. It just said authentic, that these were the real guys, like the actual photos and videos at the end, honoring those in the film.

Side note: I would have loved to work on this film! Everything from camera department to wardrobe department is entirely in my scope of interest!

Nope. I could tell that the BUDS montage was previous video and had recognized allot of the footage from previous stuff. Personally that montage caught me somewhat off guard, I've seen montages in films before obviously but this one really really got you going and was so well put together. Very well edited along with the entire movie.

Indeed. I saw it on a 35mm print and it looked great. Lump the size of Texas in my throat though!

The photos at the end are what really engrained in allot of peoples heads, Its not common I hear a theater that quiet...I saw those photos a bunch since I followed Marcus on the internet since reading his book and seeing their faces in a film this big and this much of an impact made me really happy that people could see what these guys do.

This one of the best looking war films I have ever seen, the "clean" look is so well suited to this story and so well executed. Love the Optimo flares! A nice change from the anamorphic flares in everything these days.
