Hi, happy to join the family here. I never thought it would work out, but it appears things lucked out for me.

A couple weeks ago I started gathering equipment for a short indie film I have decided to do.

I had purchased the 5d mark iii, but just returned it because amazon refused to match the $400 price drop that occurred just a few days after my purchase. So I was just deciding where to repurchase when this announcement was made. I had paid 3200 plus tax for the mark iii, so this was a no-brainer for a red one mx for 4000.

I do have a couple questions. I'm on a tight budget, so I have to cut corners wherever possible. This is a hobby, not income for me.

This is what I purchased:

red one mx (includes ssd module) battle tested
Red one nikon mount (I have several zf.2 lens)
ac adapter
Red station redmag mini
48GB redmag SSD

I'm looking at cheap battery options right now. Suggestions?

I'm wondering if I can use a Zacuto ev with the red one? I already have a zfinder pro for my canon 7d, and I'm wondering if I can make that combo work easily with the red one? If not, any cheap suggestions?

Do you see anything I'm missing to get this camera operable?

In terms of post, I'm assuming I can use these raw files with FCPX now in my retina MacBook Pro without additional hardware. Also, I will use the thunderbolt to FireWire adapter for the redmag mini.

Thanks for any advice. So happy I was actually able to squeak a RED camera with RAW workflow into my tight budget! I will be dreaming of my camera tonight.

You can use any V-mount battery solution with the RED Quickplate. As far as monitor, not sure about the Zacuto EVF, but the RED 5.6 LCD is readily available in the used market...check the RED for sale items here on REDuser.

Thanks so much for your reply. I'm looking at the IDX VL-2 lithium ion charger and two Switronix XP-L95RED V-Mount Battery Packs. Should keep me running for a while and cost is about 1k on bh. Are you saying I need to purchase a red quick plate though to use this option?

Also, I'll look out for those LCDs. Thanks for the advice.

Also, is there any kind of small cheap shoulder mounts for these cameras?

Yes, you need the RED Quickplate (or RED Cradle, which incorporates the Quickplate and a RED hard drive mount in one unit)...again both are readily available used here on REDUser or on eBay. Your best bet for shoulder mount is the R1 Base Production pack, which included handles that mount on 19mm rods and a "Shoulder Dovetail" which is a combo shoulder mount and ARRI-style dovetail....check the used market for this too.
