  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just Ordered new 27inch Imac fully loaded...

After Effects does NOT use CUDA. It uses OpenGL.

Jeff, just to clarify: there is a checkmark to enable CUDA in After Effects but it says it is for the ray tracing engine. So it is true After Effects doesn't use CUDA for anything useful to R3Ds but I added my iMac's vid card to the text file and I was able to select CUDA in the After Effects preferences.

Patrick, when you get a chance would you mind giving us an update on your experiences so far? now that you have had it for a while now. Thanks

There is. And I realize that I'm arguing a losing battle because of this that has appeared in CS6. Let's just say that I hope some day the GPU acceleration in there actually makes use of CUDA. ;) Actually, I'm 99.9% sure that it will with the next paid update. I'm also expecting a few more niceties, such as Premiere MPE style acceleration in AE, among other updates to the other apps in the suite. Adobe has a very real chance of capturing the industry here and they would be foolish to let that slip from their grasp. FCPX gets more promising with every update, but is platform-specific and Apple's pro-level hardware support is in limbo. Avid is failing, there's no other way to quantify it. That ship is sinking fast. Unless they make a serious course correction next week at NAB, it doesn't bode well for them.

Can you use the Imac with a second monitor via thunderbolt?

You can indeed. It works with the Apple Thunderbolt display, obviously. It will also drive a standard DisplayPort monitor as well, but that restricts what you can have on the Thunderbolt chain before it. In most situations, it's fine, but I've run across a few issues -- you essentially have to make sure one of the two channels on the chain is completely open for Displayport signaling.

Patrick you may be on a big shoot? hope so. Anyway any updates on your experience this far would be appreciated.

Does anybody know if the mLogic mLink R can hold the new RED-ROCKET X ? Or does it need to be even bigger?

Been really tempted to buy a new iMac, my 27 inch 2010 iMac doesn't really hold up on 4K material. Exporting 4K from Premiere is way too slow. Still waiting for the Mac Pro and then decide what to do. I hope Apple will announce something that will blow my mind :)

That's the thing - do I pull the trigger on a fully specced imac, look into a Hackintosh, or wait for the Mac Pro annoucment (as I have been for 2 or 3 years now)?

Time is money so I wouldn't bother with a Hackintosh.

I have enough issues with my Maya 3D workstations here.

Do you mean in terms of the build, or the potential bug fixing?

IMHO waking up one day and firing up your workstation to find that it updated somehow or has stopped working due to a new patch you didnt realise you installed is not a good way to start :)
